My best guess is the google spider hit devshed hard and indexed a lot of the forum pages and archive pages.

So if/when this happens, is the "spider" seen as an anonymous user, a bunch of anonymous users, or does it not show up like that at all? Anyone know?

www.seochat.com is a great place for this discussion. As far as I can tell it shows up as 1 user, as a google spider which crawls through your entire site.
