gotta love smoking

So I'm smoking a cigaret and I'm wondering if I should stop!? I mean, how could I stop? Don't you love the sweet taste of smoke going through your throats and relieve... I know smoking is bad, BAD! And all the diseased lungs and brains pictures from tobaco is not going to convince me (what a stupid initiative, but the stats say it works) that's for sure.

I know for a fact that the hardest part in quiting is to quit the habits, not the smoking. Especially that I love (<= insert a more dramatic sounding word instead) smoking a cigaret just after a blunt, what a sweet pleasure, that and mushrooms go together.

So I say to myself, "sure I can stop", I did it a few years ago when I ran out of money, had no craving no nothing, just stopped from one day to another without realising it but now I consider myself officially addicted. I won't stop smoking pot that's for sure but tobaco gotta stop for me.

Is there any ex-smoker here? What were your motivations to stop (other than whinny non-smokers)?

yep, ex-smoker here, and i think i had it worse than you - used to go through 1 to 2 packs a day. i started smoking back in junior highschool, i think, and besides making a serious dent in my allowance a lot of people kept bugging me to stop the habit. well... to make a long story short, one day i realized there wasn't one good thing about the habit; any good thing i can think about it was just inside my head, so i stopped cold turkey. i never went back to the habit, nor had any cravings for a puff.

Well, I smoked for a little over 7 years until I decided it was in my best intrest to quit. There were several factors that helped me make that decision. 1) Cancer runs in my family, 2 of which died of lung cancer. 2) I am extremely stingy and got pissed off when they raised the price of a pack to over $3.00. 3) It finally got to where when I would smoke the back of my throat would hurt.
As far as the addition goes, I believe it is more mental than physical, or let me rephrase, the mental aspect of it is much stronger than the physical one. No smoker will ever be able to quit unless he/she truely wants to quit. Most people that attempt to quit and fail, fail because then don't want to quit.

Great replies, thanks a lot.

Like Roninblade said the reason why it is difficult to quit is mental, not chemical. That's what causing me so much problems.

I don't think I can stop cold-turkey but my consommation (pot and cigaret) greatly decreased and i'll try to keep it that way.

P.S.

Looks like my original msg wasn't saved, so here it is again?!

I just saw a Bill Hicks show (relentless) in which he stats that he uses to go through "2 lighters a day"! I'm far from that.

I've been smoking since I was 15 and 10 years later, I keep stopping and restarting... it's so hard to kick. Tonight I just had some cigareetes after a long period without and I know that I won't ever be able to kick it propoery until I definitely have a reason not to smoke.. I mean a wife, a family and all that stuff are probably going to be the only thing that can keep me off it....

oh I don't know

I'm just babbling... I'll spare you this waffle and go and roll a cigarette instead...

but before I go, it seems timely to have a rant about Sendmail. I triied building it on one of the webservers I work on and the installation process really suXors !!!!

That's what I do too actually, I stop and restart and... I don't have a strong reason to stop but I smoked an average a cigarete a day, far from 3-5.

FYI, I read an article (in a science mag) that stated that stopping and restarting is actually worst for you health than to simply completely stop or just to plain smoke. So think about it, it looks like you'll have to stick to one extreme.

And sendmail has always been known to be quit hairy.

Riv, it is so hard to give up alright, and yes it is the mind part that is the hardest. You associate a smoke with say a coffee, or a J, or whatever (blunt ? ) , and so as you pour that coffee your already thinking *fag*. The best advice I could give is exercise. After you have a good run, or a game of basketball, or a work-out you don't really feel like a cigarette. If you play sport after smoking you feel it in your lungs, so sport definately helps.

Good luck Bro,

Z.

>>Like Roninblade said the reason why it is difficult to quit is mental, not chemical.

I have to disagree. Having been a smoker for longer than I was not. (I have smoked for well over 20 years)

I took Zyban to stop. Spent three days with massive withdrawal. Shivers, sweats and insomnia.

Here a pack of 25 cigs costs $10+, so cost is a big factor. Think about the cost, $10 per day for 20+ years!

Two reasons to give up young and avoid the serious addiction problems.

1 Smoking causes impotence.

2 87% of non smoking women will not go out with a smoker. (this is an Australian statistic and I am assuming you are a teenage male, being on a programming forum)

hey, the first reason alone is enough for any man out there to give up smoking altogether.

so, you've given up on giving up smoking?
