Great: ColdFusion forum, but no .NET?
Ocassionally I have a question about .NET in general, but then I think 'wait, which forum should I post on? C#? VB? or General?' Well, to address this, I think perhaps we can convert the C# forum into the .NET forum, since there's hardly anything in that forum at the moment. What do the admins think?
![]() My question: you know how you can import entire libraries in java a la import java.io.*? Can you do the same with namespaces in .NET? i.e., I see this all the time: Code:
using System; using System.Web; using System.Web.UI; using System.Web.UI.WebControls; Can I just do using System.*? Will that work? |

Maybe a .NET general forum with subforums for C# and VB?
As for your question, have you tried it?!? ---John Holmes... |

Wait... there's already an ASP, C#, and Visual Basic forum... are you saying take all of those away and make only one ".NET" forum?

I think it's good to distinguish between the languages used within the .Net framework as opposed to labeling a forum .Net. This would lead to a flood of questions about Visual Interdev, SQL 2000 on a machine using the framework, hell maybe even MONO.
It's frustrating enough to hear from a boss "We're moving to .Net" "Moving what? Language, database, web server?" I always ask. All the while it's brought up that .Net allows for different languages to be used, but everybody I know that is developing in the .Net environment (which isn't that many people) just talks about C# or VB (cringing as I type, thinking about spending so much money to upgrade only to still use VB). Here's a good summation of why a general .Net forum would, in my opinion, be more trouble than it's worth. http://news.com.com/2100-1001-979878.html But then again, I don't really develop in the environment, so maybe there are some general issues that would deserve a .Net forum.

What about a general .Net forum leaving all others as they are now and if someone has a specific question regarding vb, then it gets directed to the VB forum. Create a label 'All questions relating to .Net not covered in other forums' and then if we get a flood of questions for example about Visual Interdev then we can identify that as a subject which requires it's own forum.

Thanks for your input. I don't think Visual Interdev is part of the .NET framework though. Neither is VB, ASP, SQL Server, although they're definitely related.

I like that idea. We could still have separate C#/VB forums. A .NET forum would nevertheless be beneficial because all of its supported languages should have the same functions. Like my question about importing namespaces, should be the same concept for all .NET languages. SepodatiCreations: I will try it. Sometimes my lazy side gets the better of me, and I forget to try some simple things. We'll see. |

So why have an ASP forum? Isn't VB and C# what you program ASP in or some crap like that... ??

Sepo: nope. VB and C# have nothing to do with ASP. That's why we need an ASP forum as well as .NET, VB, and C# forums.
I think we can toss in anything .NET into a .NET forum, including ASP.NET and C#. I can't see traffic overload as problem, as the # of .NET programmers on devshed is pretty low. Still, it'd ne nice to have its own board. .. .. .. .. //ASP: written in VBScript, JavaScript, Perl or Python //ASP.NET: Written in C#, VB.NET, JScript.NET, Perl.NET, Python.NET, blah blah blah //VB: pure crap with some exgruciatingly painful syntax. //I usually don't think about the ridiculous syntax when doing ASP/VBScript, but when I do VB, I think it's so stupid. |

Christ they like making things confusing, I always thought VB.NET was an upgrade from VBScript which was an upgrade from VB or something along those lines, like PHP4.3 is an upgrade from 4.2 and so on....

I have a better idea, let's just take all the MS stuff out!!
No more confusion, then we can go back to our debate on having an advanced and a beginners php forum ![]()

Just scrap everything and make an MS "Programming" Language forum... with the quotes.
