Oh, he uses it for more than just internet. He uses the lan for company side work also, considering he is called at home quite a bit to fix some problem.
As far as the distance, straight line of sight would be about 1/2 mile, driving would be around 2 1/2 miles away.
There is only one downside to his setup, it suffers badly during bad weather.
