How are you connecting to the internet from home...
Just interested... want to see if developers tend to have faster internet access than the general public (thats my hypothesis, anyhow)
I'm only putting down the basic kind of connections... if you are using T1 or T3 or higher (like OCx), you're a lucky person, so select 'other' and let us know what you're using. I'm on Cable @ home... ![]() |

I used to have cable with 1.7mbits down and 400kbits up, so yeah I think it's above average
![]() BTW, I think poll would make more sense if it was devided in speeds rather then names, since both xdsl and cable can be faster then t1 (mine is example of such), and again both xdsl and cable vary from 256kbits to 3mbits (in masses, that is)

Plain old 56k dial-up. I was thinking of ADSL, but the prices here are astronomic... I was thinking about ISDN, but my dad says I don't need it. Well, I guess I'm stuck with the old 56k... But it works just fine

56k modem
There's no other alternative where I'm based unless I want to pay out $2000/month + setup fees for a dedicated line.

I have ADSL from earthlink ($50/month) here in the states- 1.5mbps down /400kbps up. It's SUPER reliable- I have a cron script that checks every minute for network connectivity by pinging external sites, and it fails a couple of minutes every month.
Earthlink is a great DSL provider (in the Boston area, at least), they don't ban you from running servers or opening up your bandwidth as a public access point. If I pay a little more ($20/month) I can get a static IP too. At work one office has 400k SDSL and my other office has a 1.5 dedicated T1 for about 20 people. I have a pretty nice bandwidth situation all around. My parents, who live in rural Vermont (they have 1,200 people in their entire town, their closets neighbors are 1/4 mile away) have 500kbps SDSL. They are on a small local telephone company who upgraded- pretty cool. There is hope for some rural areas, I guess. |

i have 1.5mb down/612kb up ADSL from Telus here in Alberta, Canada for $26 Canadian dollars. don't i feel special
![]() one of my observations is that my friends on crap internet tend to be more prone to programming.....probably because my broadband friends are playing games with me eheheheh i ran a game server because i had a reliable connection, i only got into puter stuff when some guys suggested that i keep stats on the server which meant i had to get a web server (apache) and start learning some stuff.

You`l never get any accurate data from this type of poll anyhow, as Al already mentioned, using names doesn`t necesarily work due to speed differences, not to mention the fact that many many countries are still way behind on the roll out of higher speed connection systems. Including the bloody UK!
I voted 56K modem, but finally ADSL has become available in my area so I'll be hooking up with that in the next month or two.

why is that anyway?
my buddies in Australia say the internet is just brutal there. in North America, the standard is 56k and companies advertise broadband internet but on some Australian gaming sites, there are actually adds saying '28.8k is too slow, sign up for lightning fast 56k internet'. one of my friends in Aus. just got DSL and he said the download cap is 1GB, that is just brutal ![]() |

Australia drags behind in it world and there is no doubt about it. Everything is capped, and so far the best deal is 512 adsl with 3 gigs +7 at night per month, and that's for $usd60. Now, this figures barely cover what I've used in usa per week, but I guess thats just me. I also heard they don't have t1 trunks here, so your only option is either xdsl or fiber.
Things are getting better though, there is one project that is going to bring au's net up in the next couple years. I am looking for a way to join those guys, but it will go public in next 2 years or so. |

Unfortunately all I can get at home is 56k. Currently just out of the reach for DSL, but get this:
The guy I work with lives just a little bit farther down the road from me and we both live around 1/2 mile from where I work with the exception that he is located on top of a huge hill while I am located in a valley section. We have a dedicated T1 at work and he rigged broadcast antennas at work and his house for an extended 11Mbps lan from his house to work. So he has a dedicated T1 for free. Doesn't that suck. ![]() |
