Man this sucks so much. Hello?!?! Can someone give us an update as to when this forum is going to be back in a functional state? At the moment its bordering on being un-usable.
and what the heck is with the gay nicname? >>> «§@NÐM@N» Everytime I edit or make a post i get the error message Quote:
If it really does email them I think their inbox is getting rather full. I think in their aliases file you most likely would see this line bit-bucket@developershed.com /dev/null Last edited by a.koepke : February 17th, 2003 at 12:34 AM. |

The following is an edited version of an e-mail we sent to one concerned forum member that sent us an e-mail about the forum troubles:
We had most of the problems solved last week. Most of them were due to mysql taking up too much resources (memory, etc.) to keep up with our growth. The FreeBSD / mysql threading system doesn't scale well, and we were running out of memory. So, we moved the MySQL server to a Linux box, and that solved all kinds of problems - until what seemed to be hardware problems started popping up. Unexplained reboots, lockups, kernel panics, etc. So we added another GB of RAM to the original FreeBSD box, moved the DB back, and we're trying to optimize the best we can. Forums searches appear to be out of the question for now because of the size of the forums. (We are looking into ways of fixing that - it looks doable.) Today we're recompiling the FreeBSD kernel to allow for larger applications. MySQL was hitting the kernel limit and choking this weekend. Unfortunately, We'm not in a position where We can recompile the kernel and reboot that box until tomorrow. We really don't know if/when the threading will be an issue any more. More new hardware (linux) will be the answer if that's the case. We also ran a repair on the forums db's last night (as we found some tables were corrupted) and that seemed to help immensely. We are getting over 100k page impressions a day now (even with our downtime), up from 40-50k/day back in January. The growth, as well as the hardware problems have gotten ahead of us. We think we're getting closer to a solution, but We really can't say for sure. Believe me, it's not intentional. It's like being slash-dotted every day around here lately, everything that can go wrong is going wrong. We appreciate your patience, and again, sorry we don't follow up with you, our members, more. We wish we had more time to dedicate to fixing this. We're pulling in a FreeBSD expert (actually one of the owners of the company who tends to be very hands off) to help this week.

What about switching to another db? Couldn't this be a scalability problem of MySQL?

Possibly, yes. I think we have a much better my.cnf for our current situation now, and hopefully that will hold us for quite a while.

thx for the insight, and a.koepe & roninblade, bravo, i salute you for having enough braincells to talk sh*t on someone's nick.
Gay is using someone's nick as a point of insult whom you know nothing about. Pretty much juvenile bitches. But i digress, this is the level of intellect/gayness one runs into at a public board. For being "senior members" you sure in hell don't act like it. But perhaps, that's how you became "senior members", with such intellectual posts as that garbage. How old are y'all.... 12? So then, how bout instead of letting this break out into an all out flame, stick to the freakin subject. Or am i to expect a 'gay' response as a comeback, perhaps more sh*t on the nick? Tell me you all aren't that predictable. |

a bit touchy aren't you? i don't know about you, but your unique nick may be screwing with your number of posts - you've already made a few posts but it's still showing zero. Last edited by roninblade : February 17th, 2003 at 10:08 PM. |
