How much traffic before monetizing?

Hi guys,

I was just wondering at what size you began to monetize your sites?

We have exclusive deals with advertisers until the end of September, (we gave them a special deal or our development period), but after this date we need to start thinking seriously about how we are going to make money out of the site.

We are getting about 2,000 unique visitors a day giving ~20,000 page views.

Our signed-up users list is 2,300 as of last night, about 200 of which login each day (this needs increasing!).

I was just wondering what sort of targets we should set for the end of September so we can decide how much of our marketing budget to spend.

I think at our current increase we should be hitting 4,000 uniques a day by then....... is that enough to be talking to advertisers or should we try and increase traffic further (ie spend more on marketing) first?

I don't think it's the size you should be concerned about, a more important factor is whether you think your users will pay. You should ask them whilst pointing out how you are going to enhance their experience of your site using the funds they would provide.

Users won't ever be paying, the business model is based on targetted advertising only, ala facebook.

Than why not start now? Just please don't get offensive about it. So many sites seem to have more ads than content, real estate wise. I avoid them.

Thanks for your comments Arty,

We have been very careful of this and most pages across the network carry only one sky-scraper banner placed at the side of the content.

We already have our dummy sponsors adds in place so users will be used to having an advert there by the time we advertise.

My question was a more open one.... just at what traffic level everyone started running adds and how successful this was for them.
