Wink I'm interested in....(maybe a moderator could help?)

Hey there!

I'm developing an open source project for Food Banks as part of the www.paleemediafanatics.com philanthropy efforts.

I'd be interested in publishing an article (including source, of course), under the flash section of devshed.

I'm a PHP newbie, so I'd be very happy to meet up with a more advanced scripter (the project involves an WYSIWYG interface that'll allow the Food Banks to easily make site updates)

Any advice would be very much appricited!

Thx,
the pale e

heh...

Yeah...Sigur Ros is pretty heavy stuff (especially to an unsuspecting user)...I've been meaning to change it to turn soundtrack on (as opposed to defaulted on)...

I've got a template started...
http://www.paleemediafanatics.com/w...ankcontrol.html
http://www.paleemediafanatics.com/w...ankdynamic.html

The way it works, is food banks can download the swf's, and start entering data into their 'control' version (I'll have a password or something for basic authentication). Right now, the vision buttons works, but it's pretty primitive.

I'm thnking that if I could get some help making some PHP scripts, I'd be able to greatly enhance the customizeability (is that a word of the project...

Any interested philanthropists?

HAve fun!

thx,
the pale e

PHP's dishin out text documents, that the flash client reads (gets it's variables from)...PHP's, a middle man...

The PHP I need is more dynamic (I'd like to have plenty of site customization options)

Thx,
the pale e

A good site for tips on PHP/Flash/MySQL integration is http://www.snowvids.com. I think someone posted info about a book that covers flash with php in the Flash forum on this site too.

My advice would be to just read up on basic PHP though - if you can do any actionscripting at all, PHP should be a doddle in comparison (IMO;\). When you know the basics of PHP, sending variables to/from a flash movie to a PHP script is quite simple - just a matter of printing out the list of variables separated by '&' chars in the PHP script. that's it!

ie
PHP Code:
print("name=$name&email=$email");

All the other techniques for fetching info from flat files/dbs, manipulating data etc etc is exactly the same as in coding any other PHP app.

Not quite sure what you mean when you say
Quote:

though - could be a big headache in terms of duplicate data and importing the data into the 'live' database.

It'd be a lot easier building the flash interface, writing the PHP scripts to handle the data entered and then dump the info into a mysql db right from the start (keep it really really simple if you want them to use it immediately).

Flas vs. PHP

We once did a site in flash and php. The outcome was great but it didn't come without a price. There are a lot of pitfalls and you can't work them together as seemlessly as with HTML. In any case, I suggest you keep the flash where it is and use PHP to add functionalities: like forms, polls, and other fancy stuff.

Great site! I wish more people would be doing such quality work in flash

OT, In reply to the vote options ...

Considering that a human being is defined by its work, what kind of people would choose the third option?
