Also I learned on his site www.dollardns.net he offers DNS Management.

If you have a Dynamic IP address on your server, this is truly the way to go!!

Lets say your ISP changes your IP address, now you have to go to your domain's register and change your DNS Server's IP address, then wait for up to 72hrs for it to take affect....

Not with dollardns.net!!
You go to www.dollardns.net and login change the IP address and it is fixed when you click the button!!!

So your site can be down for a day, two, maybe three.
Or your site can be down for just minutes!!

I'll take the down for minutes choice thank you......

Probably quite a few but you have to remember these are probably (cant speak for all here) not in any way large customer based sites. Mainly because: they probably wont have redundency (ie if a hard-drive goes, the site is down because they may not be using a diskarray/Raid), the internet pippage to handle 1000s of hits a second, permission from their ISP. Thats not to say it cant be done as many have servers at home, large internet pipes and friendly, I just dont imagine that its done very often. I host a personal site at home, but thats low hittage.

thank you very much for your kind and friendly reply (a rare jewel here on devshed)

If you calculate all the fees you have to pay to have your own personal server at home, in which way will this at all be cheaper than hosting on a real box out ?


let us study this case .

I have more than 60 domains, 4 of them being very hot.

I am paying $90 per month for a VPS (not a box)


If I want to have my own server, I would need to :

buy an IP : ? $$
get a true pipe: at least $100 / month here in Switzerland.
keep a box running 24 hours. Electricity bill. how much can you estimate that to be per month??
do daily backups. RAID disks......


how on earth could this be cheaper than a VPS?

Your probably better off keeping it the way you have it (though someone else could maybe tell you if the pricing is competitive as I work for a company who hosts their own sites so I've never had to source hosting prices).

With the hassle and costs it would take for you to host your own servers with at least 4 high traffic sites, it wouldnt be realistically feasable to be doing it from your living room

(IMHO obviously)

ok, don't know if this has been said already, but i'd like to throw it out there anyways.
