Internet Access for Laptop while on road

I am writing to inquire if anyone knows of anything that would allow you to have interent access with your laptop while you are driving on the road? I have seen things where you can hook up a satellite phone to the laptop, but was looking more for something that you could diretly connect to the laptop and use.

    Thanks

Look for your local 3G providers, up to 384K, but you pay by the byte ...

How "on the road" are we talking? Are you going to be out in the middle of nowhere, traveling from hotel to hotel, major cities, etc? If you're going to be in a decently populated area and just looking to check your mail, you'll probably be able to scan around for wireless access points, or use a coffee shops or something like that.

There are so many wireless hotspots popping up everywhere that, if you don't mind the risk of tapping into a free wifi connect, you can probably find them readily available. I drove across the country last year and noted many interstate turnpikes even had them at the rest areas. Also, about half the hotels now seem to have wifi access from the rooms, and it's a bit more secure usually than an unrestricted public zone (they give you a login code at the front desk). I did that, and got a 1-800 dial-up number from my ISP to fall back on and was able to connect and get online every day. I question the value of the more expensive options unless you'll be needing I-absolutely-must-get-on-this-very-minute access, in which case you might still be quite disappointed when you get to Montana and find you ain't got no signal ...

Orange, Vodafone and T-Mobile offer 3G cards in the UK that you just plug into the laptop like a wireless network card. Although, think you have to have a monthly contract for 12-18 months so maybe not the best option.

Jamie, I think Tim suggests that places like Montana are too sparsely populated to have 100% coverage ...

I'm going to be leaving for an over two week trip on Tuesday and bringing the laptop. Hope to just grab a Starbucks on the way or something. ;-)
Did you know that McDonalds charges eight dollars and hour for access???

Hmm. I say get one of those wifi interceptors... free connection, thanks to all the houses and hotels you drive near. Don't have link and can't find one on hackaday, but it's there somewhere.
