Interveiw cancelled, could it be my URL ?

Hi,

I have my very first interveiw in a weeks time for a web developer position , anyone been there, done that and could give me some tips, clues as to what to expect . Salary is very low but I need to get my foot on the ladder somehow.
I am self taught In html, php, mysql, I can use Dreamweaver, Flash, and a little knowledge of fireworks,I have an underststanding of JavaScript
My last 33 years at work have been served in manufacturing only.
(Ending In redundancy)
So obviously do not have a clue as to what will be expected of me.
Any comments will be welcomed.
Thanxs
Tony

Well, if your self taught and confident then go in there like you can do anything they ask.
I suspect that since you're self taught you're not afraid to open a text book.
If you come off like you can do it then you can. Just make sure that you have the reference texts available.

I give you this advice 'cause I did the same thing in a different field no too long ago.
I was asked to engineer something specific I knew little about but I had a general background experience. I opened a couple of books went to the computer and had a product engineered in 2 days. Simple as that.

Watch out for an interviewer who knows very little about PHP and who is afraid of open source projects like apache and PHP and is afraid about a lack of support for these projects.

I haven't done any job interview in my short carreer but I have experienced these problems with clients.

Bizzk
P.S. probably your interview has already happened but anyway...

Well good luck then, once I tried to convince a client to use PHP/mySQL but they were afraid that when I would be gone (I was just a tempory consultant) there wouldn't be any support for the application.

When you buy a commercial product you can call their toll free number...

Unhappy

Hi DJdrenaline,

Thanxs for the good luck, but unfortunatley I recieved a phone call from the company two days before the arranged Interview, telling me that the interview has been cancelled. They said I was not what they were looking for at present, but will keep my details on file for future reference. What a downer.
Any comments regarding my web site would be welcomed, I think maybe it was a deciding factor in the interview cancalation ?.

Thanxs again for all comments to date.

Tony

About your site:

Aren't there many other dating sites? Is your site different from them (for example do you specialize in a specific geografical area, or do you target a specific sort of people (a dating site for people over 50 for example))?

About the sites design: you might want to improve it (I understand that you are just starting, and it is quite good for a fresh site). Make it a little bit more cool and less romantic.

I also recommend you to remove the text "ATRACTIVE OR NOT" from your frontpage and put in normal letter instead of CAPS.

As mentioned before you should make it unique, and you should make the look somewhat more "cool" (whatever that is...).

Is your site a deciding factor in cancelling the interview? Probably not, because in this times of a economic slow down companies are afraid of hiring new people. Your site does look a little "unprofessional", but I am sure that you will be able to improve that.

Bizzk
P.S. I just want to give my opinion, please don't take it to negative.
