bcyde, you didn't know the ALT-X trick? (for Larry 3 iirc it was CTRL-ALT-X)
![]() ... best wishes for you and your wife. ![]() Yeah, and Civ3 got me addicted for some years too... I even once bought the linux version when I was first trying to get away from Micro**** completely... MJE, you think we were a couple of teenagers trying to prove to each other who is "kewlest"? Yes, I guess we were But I think this competition among us was one big part that pushed me forward with programming, hardware, learning and also some things that I am not very proud of today. But I think I can safely say that I was "only a kid" then...I met SCO unix only once, this was during my second adventures into self-employment around 22 (not sure). A customer had it running on a server. Replaced it with a SuSE 5 then - iirc a UNIX whose shell scripts end in ".com" and executables in ".exe" - Admitted, I was really surprised to read "Microsoft" somewhere in the MOTD (?)......M PS: does anybody agree we should make this thread sticky? So everybody who wants can introduce himself here, and we don't have these 100s "Hello, I am new here" threads...

Unfortunately, didn't pick up on that trick. LLL, was always one of those games I just wanted to complete just to see how far they'd go back in the days. Of course compared to games these days, the content is quite tame, but at the time it was quite racy despite the ridiculous graphics. And thanks for the congrats. ![]()

22, Unmarried, male, "American blooded". I am but a wee-one in the world of Hacking - been plugging at programs for less than 3 years now, building/repairing/upgrading PCs for about 5 years, and making web pages for about 8. My foray into "serious" programming pretty much starts with JavaScript at the time I registered here - Perl learnin' followed about 4 months after that. No formal education, though I pretend I'm in school from time to time
![]() First computer was a 486/33 with 4MB of RAM and Win 3.1 (actually, the first computer in the house was an old tape-driven contraption that I don't remember). First PC that actually turned into my own was a P1 120MHz / 32MB of RAM, Win95/1st. Never played LLL - I liked Warcraft, Jazz Jackrabbit, Tyrian, Castle of the Winds, Aethra, Ancients, etc. RPGs and strategy mostly. Phantasmagoria II and Shivers II were pretty kewl too when they came out (advanced stuff with all that FMV and speech). |

Interesting thread... Santa Claus here... my third/last kid (girl) is older than a few of you here (just scraped past Ctb)... just started her second four year stint for her law degree after finishing her first four in Criminal Psychology...
Well, dad, (me I hope) .. enlisted and got shipped off after landing in NA from South America.. 14 mths in Viet was more than a wake up call, but at least better than being in Jail .. hehe... moved on to do Math.. and of course, failed my Phd all because I couldnt write/present my paper properly, but did a brilliant job of adding 2 and 2 .. imagine! On mainframs since 86.. then came home with a comp science degree... all paid for by a company which had money to burn! Since then, every day is just a blur of code... ![]()

Thanks, not much of a drinker, but Glendale is really close to where I live though (Burbank/Sun Valley). BTW, if you're in Glendale make sure you stop by Porto's Bakery for some great pastries and Cuban food, that place is always packed, but prices are cheap and the food is really good. -b |

I vote for that. It is interesting to read about others and it would be nice to have it all in once place. You could change the title of the thread to something like "Introduce yourself here" or something equally unimaginative. Webm, I think your story takes the cake so far. A lot of interesing history there! All you singles out there, now don't go sending Webm PMs for pictures of his daughter and her phone number! ![]() |

I'm a single 23 year old with a high school education -- I'm self taught in web related technologies. I started on a 386 when I was about 13, using it mostly for homework and some for tinkering. I started with HTML, JavaScript, CSS at ~15, Perl at ~17, PHP/MySQL at about ~21, and recently started working with XML.
I installed cable modems for a year, so I have experience with Macs and just every version of Windows out there. I use FreeBSD so I have some basic knowledge there as well.

This has been an interesting thread, particulary since most of the posts have been mostly from the "old-timers"
Anyway, I am 34, started late in the IT industry, moved to Finland to get into it, nobody took me seriously coming from IT recruitement in the UK. Started PHP in Dec 2001, I know, I started reading my first PHP book when I was waiting for the arrival / birth of our boy. I think you have seen the picture Have been into computers for a while, though when I was at college all those years ago we were on BBC computers, way before windows. So I was mostly into games, driving, sports and Quake. eCommerce application support nowadays, good skillset, I should move somewhere else and get more money Jamie

Started with Front Page.......ugghhh! Then realized I needed to learn how to write HTML. Now, it's been about 7 years and I know HTML, DHTML, XML, JavaScript, SQL, C#, ASP.NET, and new to Java, but not so new since I know C#. What a mess. So many things just to do what we do here at work.
I love programming and now that I know Java, I can make those dumb little Applet games you see all over. Actually, I am hoping to make interactive market charts with it, but the games are fun for now. My hobbies include BMX, Skateboarding, politics (includes hating Bush), and racing my car. I am not one to watch much TV.....what a waste of time!
