Me: 30 yrs old, I helped fork() off 1 child process (3 yrs old). BS in Economics from UVM, worked as a community organizer for a non-profit environmental organization for 3 years, moved to technical work and been programming (mostly for the web) full-time since 2000. Did programming and database maintenance from 1998-2000.
Started on a Vic 20, moved to a C64, then to a Commodore Plus 4 (remember that fiasco? I C64 that wouldn't run C64 software. . .what they hell were they thinking?) and then back to a C64. Used a C64 all through high school. First x86 box I got was a 386sx-16, upgraded eventually to 6meg of RAM. Did some raytracing (pov-ray) and was AMAZED at the speed difference a math co-processor gave me. Couldn't afford one of those kick-*** 486DX chips. . . How far we've come. First used unix in 1992, first used linux in '97 and been using it ever since, finally settling on Debian as the distro that best suits me for servers, redhat and Debian for desktops. Skill set- in order of ability: * Perl, mod_perl, apache, linux, mysql, CSS, HTML (pretty good with all of them) * PHP, Python, XML/XSLT, PostgreSQL, shell scripting, sys-admin skills, graphic design. * MS Office automation, Graphic design, Desktop publishing, Win32 (baarf) See ya'll around! huh,
my name is florian and i'm 23. i started to be "with" computers @ 12, i think... just watching my parents working with their 286 @ 8 mhz.... (i used that time to get some expirience with doing some crashes while playing with the "os" bios; my parents damned me i think) after the time, 286 was out we got a 386 at 16 mhz. the first game i played was a submarine simulation. nothing but white lines - nearly unplayable... that time i touched first qbasic. (did never wrote a nice program that time) ill never forget 1994, that time i got my first & OWN computer. (a intel 486/33dx - may it rest in peace) i also began to program loads with borland pascal & assembler that time. nearly two years later microsoft released its win95 and borland delphi 1.0. :P a horrible time for somebody who learned to play with interrupts & dma-calls till perfection. after i realized that good old dos will die i just rested my programming carrier. (at least because i had no money for buying additional books to learn) about 1999 i bought a new computer (yeaahhh, nearly 4 years without computer - can't understand myself...) for playing counterstrike (fascinating time). that period i touched the macromedia family. i found my new destination - webdesign. im now familiar with html, action-script, java-script, php, python(less), css, xml, lotus-notes-script and vb (&vba). i never expected how useful my pascal-expirience would be. im now member of the german air force since 1998, ive been more than one year nt&domino-administrator, but my normal job is in telecommunications. i just will try now to create complete solutions for database-related web-sites in addition of new and wicked design-elements. i got lots of graphical expierience by my mum (thanks). oh and maybe its interesting why i went to do some webdesign, because the 3w is overloaded with uncreative stuff, just like frontpage-style made... (uh and i dont like bill, but respect) i made my first render walkarounds with 3dstudio (not max ), then a little bit bryce 3d and at least cinema4d.oh and i also work on a directx using project. quite a kind of online game. my part is the server-program, quiet interesting part! i love to move loads of data around. (i bet we will finish it soon ;D) thats from me, D$ Last edited by di$c$niffer : October 16th, 2003 at 09:45 PM. |

Man, I feel really old compared to a lot of you. I'm 37, married with 3 kids ages 9,5 and 9 months. I dropped out of college and dumped my scholarship to be a professional musician/music teacher.
Did that for about 12 years then got into software support. Worked my way up through the ranks and ended up managing Tech Support for a pretty big retail, shrink-wrap software company. I hate to say this but I must also confess that I actually worked for Microsoft for a while (please don't hold that against me..everyone screws up occassionally). What a mistake!! Unless you truly believe that Gates and Balmer are 2/3 of the Holy Trinity , you don't need to work there. Started working with PHP and MySQL about a year ago. Prior to that, I worked mainly with ASP, VB and MS-SQL for around 5 years. Can't remember what my first computer was but I seem to recall that it had no hard drive and only 640k. Most of my "professional" experience has actually be on the analysis side of the IT dept making sure that applications are designed and coded to meet business and end-user needs so I've sort of gotten into the development side of things in kind of a backwards fashion. |

My problem is this: I really liked computers when I was young, but nobody in my extended family knew anything about computers; they were all Liberal Arts teachers or doctors.
So I didn't have any inspiration or insight into programming until high school. If only I started earlier... ![]() |

I'm 31, female, and TAKEN...
I have been doing web design for about 4 years. I am a student about to graduate with a certificate in Computer Admin. I am knowledgeable with Windows, Novell, and Linux, along with networking them all together. I can also build computers from scratch. I like underground metal along with other forms of independent music. I also like animals; I have fish, reptiles, and a cat. I will have you all know that I failed "The Geek Test" miserably: Take the geek test Resistance is not futile, and I will not be assimilated. ![]() |

Hello everyone
Wow I feel small and dumb compared to all of you! I'm 17, female, in my senior high school year, half-French half-Polish, currently residing in Poland but soon moving to London and then Boston ![]() I have some basic HTML and CSS skills and that's about it, but it's fun anyway!!! I love Notepad, it's the best program ever. My favorite computer game is an old DOS game developed by an Estonian software company, Bluemoon - Skyroads. ![]() And I don't watch TV, I don't even watch Alias anymore. My avatar is just a display of my admiration of Jennifer Garner, the greatest young actress there is !!! Okay, well, cheers y'all Cyan |
