JVM Speed issue

Hi,
I am looking into using Coldfusion + J2EE or Php +J2EE for application development. But I am concern about the speed and performance issue of the JVM.
The application has to be scalable. (like a few thousand of users)
Is there anyone who has encountered speed/performance issue about Coldfusion + J2EE production environment? Can you post your view? Give me some pointer on which to choose?
