    Laptop stand type thing

I was hoping maybe I could get some ideas.

I have a LCD monitor and a laptop, whenever I have my laptop plugged into it's port replicator I use my monitor and laptop monitor to do dual displays. The problem is that the LCD monitor sits a little too high and whenever I move the mouse across screens there is a "jump" to the mouse going down about 1.5 inches - 2 inches.

I'm looking for something to put underneath my laptop to raise it up a bit. The "docking stations" that keep your laptop on a tilt would be too high. I also don't want to keep it on a stack of magazines or something, because that would look messy and trashy. I've looked all through staples, comp usa, best buy, etc without finding a single thing.

Right now I have it sitting on one of those fan things (I don't use the fan though, the idea of shooting air into the laptop vents doesn't seem like a good idea). The problem is that it's still not high enough to be "even" with the monitor. Also the base of what my laptop is sitting on is smaller than the base of the laptop, making it not the sturdiest place to keep my laptop.

I've been looking in stores everywhere for some sort of platform to put my laptop on, that is either 1.5 inches high, or is adjustable. I can't seem to find a single thing. THe base of my laptop measures 15.5"x11" so I'm hoping that this platform will be of similar dimensions.

Does anyone have any ideas for me?

Personally, I'd just build something out of the scraps I have around here. I figure 30 minutes for something rough, a day for something nice looking with a good finish.

If no ventilation were required through the bottom of the laptop I'd make a solid base. If ventilation were required I'd made a frame. In either event, I'd put quarter-round around the edges of the base to capture the laptop and keep it from sliding. You'd have to have breaks in the quarter-round for cable and device access.

I'd then add legs of a length necessary to raise the laptop to the proper height. I might even add adjustable feet for leveling and varying the height. Those can be had at Home Depot or similar.

Don't all modern laptops need ventilation? Nearly all of them have fans, which need to draw air in from someplace so they can blow it out someplace else.

I checked a friend's G3...no holes on the bottom. She does have a gizwidget that blows air across the base to enhance radiation/dissipation.
