Mailing list management

Can anyone recommend good mailing list management software to run on a Linux system, preferably free?

Here are a couple different scenarios:

What software would be good for a list with several thousand members, perhaps 6000, with a moderate amount of activity, not requiring features such as archiving and searching.

What software would be good for a list with several hundred members and moderate to high activity, requiring archiving and search capabilities?

I realize that this may involve more than one component or software package, but I would appreciate some pointers from someone that has experience setting up and managing a mailing list -- I've never done it.

Thanks,
Jesse

That's great. Good to hear your preference.

You're not the one who asked the question.
