Mozilla 1.4 and Popup blocking
Argh, have I missed something, or has the Moz team changed how the popup blocker worked? Before, I didn't have it enabled for everything, I just had it kick in for specific annoying sites. Now, I can't seem to do that, I have to turn it on full force, and then explicitly say which sites I want to allow popups. What the hell?
To me, it seems backwards to have to train the browser which sites are allowed to function as they should. I understand that most people would rather have an allout ban, but frankly, I mostly visit reputable sites where I know what to expect. I don't care about an all out ban of popups. I'd much rather have the ability to let the popups work as they should, and only disable them for sites that abuse them... If you ask me, they just ruined a great tool. I don't want to miss an important private message at my favorite form all because I forgot to allow mozilla to allow popups for that site. What a crock. The 1.4 mailer is so much more useful with the spam filter, but I kinda want to rollback to 1.3 now for the way the popup manager worked! |

Funny, I thought it was the other way around? I'm using Moz 1.3 on 'doze right now. I have to specify each siteI don't want popups on. On Moz 1.0.1 on Linux, however, I set it up to not allow any popups at all. I actually prefer the disallow them all way of doing things because it's conventient for me, but the other way around would probably be better since it's more flexible.

Hmm, I thought that's the way it used to be. I remember running an earlier version of Mozilla and not liking the popup manager, then in 1.3 I grew a liking to it. Weird how they keep flipping back and forth...
I'll give this a try I suppose. |

They ought to just do both. The old way was just to disable JavaScript code that generated popups. It was a hassle to dig through the settings and re-enable for sites like this and my online courses, but overall it worked alright for me. Now, they seem to have (in 1.3 at least) the setup where you must explicitly block sites from Tools > Popup Manager. Don't see why they can't just have the option to disable all popup JavaScript and keep the manager as well?

Yeah, it just seems like a poor (unflexible) implementation of a good idea.

I use Firebird (the browser ;p) 0.6 (Moz 1.4b) and it has the "Block Pop-up Windows" w/ a listing of sites to ALLOW pop-up's from.
