I believe that the OP used "hundreds of thousands or even millions" as a vague misunderstanding of the difference between a webserver that you or I use, and a webserver complex that Google or Yahoo uses. I don't believe it's the OP's intention to send so many emails but rather to have the capacity (purely in terms of "can the program handle this ****" and not "will the ISP shut me down) to send "a lot" of emails.

I don't get what you say because I don't have the technical background to understand all the terms yet. You don't get what I say because I have trouble phrasing myself correctly without said terms and experience. Meh. You did save my arse a few times with electronics...

Thanks gimp and ctardi.
Jeez everyone!!! My intention is to learn more about Email Marketing Software (EMS) and not SPAM people. Lyris is a commercial EMS that can send hundreds of thousands of emails per hour (info from real users of Lyris). Strongmail is another commercial EMS that can send a few millions per hour (again figures from actual companies that used Strongmail). If most of the emails in the world are sent using Sendmail/qmail/postfix/exim then what separates Strongmail from Lyris from all the free and low-cost EMS that does not even compare with these two. What design/architecture made these scalable? This is what I need to study about. -Khader P.S: If you still think I am a spammer then yes, you are right! I planned this for years. Joined Devshed in 2005, became an active Linux localization advocate, developing open source software for Linux l10n, all to disguise my ultimate intention -- SPAM. Seriously guys, I haven't been up-to-date with technology for a few years and am now getting back in to the thick of things. Thought I would get some tips from those who are more in touch with the latest technologies. |

I don't think sendmail is anything too special...here's a challange for you. Using the language of your choice, find out how long it takes to send a single email. I suspect you will find you can send over 100 per second. Now, build a nice gui over it, package it up, and sell it. |

Without looking at the two packages, its hard to say. The simple facts are that most outgoing email is sent using the listed packages. They are the defacto MTA. packages. (there may be a popular one in the MS Outlook world, I don't speak to that). There are lots of UA (user agents). What separated them? Who knows? What separates Windows from Ubuntu or Oracle from MySql? There is nothing to stop someone from charging for software, even charging for free software. Sometimes there are technical differences, sometimes it just that one company has salesmen and a price list. |
