Multiple Domains - The Same Website?
Hey all, I want to register a handful of domains and point them to the same folder on my Hostgator account that uses Cpanel.
The problem I got from support is that it is only possible when I park them on top of my primary domain. And when I do that all those new domains will end up in my primary domain folder which is totally unrelated to the domains I want to register now. Plus I want to do this more then once with different website subjects so having all my sites in one folder would just be a big mess. Anyone know of a solution for this scenario? The normal term is 'virtual domains' where you have one physical host and many domains pointing to it. Usually each virtual domain has distinct copy,/ html/php each coming from separate 'docroot' directories.
There is nothing to making many virtual domains and have them all point to a common docroot. Talk to someone more technical at your ISP. or get another ISP |

Virtual domain hosting is easy, trivial
http://httpd.apache.org/docs/1.3/vhosts/ http://foundationphp.com/tutorials/apache22_vhosts.php It takes about three minutes for a good sysadmin to setup. |

If you can, have a good look at your httpd.conf for your root domain, and serch for the domain set up, and the doc root, don't forget to back it up before you start fecking abooot

Vary appropriately for your distro. Debian Etch, for example, leaves httpd.conf fairly empty and puts most of the customication in apache2.conf and puts all the virtual host stuff in sites-available/ |

If you're with Hostgator, they use CPanel, so it's simple. Set up each of the domains as an "Add-on domain". That sets them up under the main account in sub folders. It's all automated and simple. There's no need to go mucking around with anything else, not that you'd be able to on the shared hosting accounts anyway.

On the other hand, if your host does not permit access to httpd.conf or has removed this functionality from cPanel, your registrar might give you the ability to forward to a different domain. GoDaddy does.
