Services, Hubs, Switches, Firewalls, Cables, Routers, WaveLan, brouters, bridges, token ring, ethernet, XDSL, csma/cd... all very baffelling, but that's before you have even plugged it in.. and then there are another 6 layers in the OSI model. SNMP? IP addressing? routing? port forwarding? tcp wrappers, spoofing, masquerading, udp, IOS, qnx, CISCO hardware configs.. It's all such a mess!!
I'm suggesting that we can sort this out at last with a 'Networking/hardware' forum or similar. At the moment it's hard to know where to post these things and it's surely too OT for the the 'Devshed Lounge'. So what do you think? Can we keep these discussions under the devshed roof, or do we have to stroll off to linuxquestions.org et al? christo

erm... let it fly. It'll probably fall down soon, but worth a shot. I know a couple things so I could post there too.

Well I'm rapdily learning stuff here, but whilst I have fairly advanced knowledge in some areas (eg firewall config), I fall down on the simplest things elsewhere - like how to configure a switch, or how to spec out a network.. A forum here would be a great place to offer help on the things we do know, and to shamelessly expose our ignorance on the things we don't !

Well, as a long-time-listener, first-time-caller i have no problem with shamelessly exposing my ignorance, especially when it comes to netwrking. However, i am interested in learning more and contributing (if i can help) to the new threads.
You certainly have my vote! Less talk, more action! ![]() |

yeah - I figured the original thread would die soon enough, but as alcapone pointed out, these polls remain glued to the ceiling for quite a while.. Funny how so many people read, but don't vote!

Mirax, Christo was referring to my last post --> ">150 views but only 20 votes and 3 replies"

Could be me, but I don't see any connection to that to be honest. Your point was many people viewed the thread but few voted or posted (If I got it right). From viewing only (what seemed to be the case) the thread won't remain 'glued to the ceiling' so how come that was what he was referring to with that sentence? I can understand his last sentence was, but not the other... sorry for my lack of understanding but I just simply don't get it

There is no connection - we're just bumping this thread for it to look like a sticky!

Hehe, ok
![]() Glad we (I) sorted that out.... As for bumping, the 20 persons who voted will check all these extra posts, thinking there's something usefull in them (sorry guys ) and will give the thread a popular look (many views and posts) as well as it being 'sticky'.To keep it a bit on track, I'll repost my comment from the old/dead thread since the thread seems to be deleted ![]() Quote:

thanks Mirax for bringing us back on topic ! I was thinking again last night how useful this forum could be. I was playing with SNMP, MRTG and RRDtool, but I can't even get the mrtg stats generated. I'm sure there are plenty of devshed members lurking who might be able to help sort this stuff out. I will also shortly be setting up an office network and It would be great to be able to discuss switch management, or hub selection etc - especially when buying these things is such an expensive task !
