a CMS and interfaces to news feeds such as RSS news bots which basically suck the news off sites they're allowed to

Lots of sites have news feeds that automated scripts can parse periodically.
Here's some from the BBC: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/help/3223484.stm

Key word: syndication
RSS is a way of pushing content out but most news agencies pay for full syndication from Associated Press, Reuters, BBC, etc. If you're planning to commercially exploit news feeds you should secure the proper permission from these news agencies as well. It's pretty easy to track down, if you find some guy's post around here regarding sports news briefs I believe I have links to some ...

RSS helps, but I think most of the organzations you mentioned will have a person (editor, usually either the general editor or the copy editor) whose job it is to decide which of the myriad of syndicated stories their readers will be interested in.

a person? an editor? What a concept. I wonder if this will catch on?
I'm pretty sure that Google does not have a human do it. Sometimes I wonder if ABC, NBC and CBS actually still have editors, but that is going OT. |

My sister in law works for CNN. If you're watching the main channel when she's at work, it's her job to check the 'wire' and type (copy/paste) the abstracts into the headline crawl along the bottom.

yea sometimes I do wonder the samething because I have seen some sites that just have a whole lot of information on there website. But like I know MSNBC and CNN has someone to manage the content but I was just thinking of making a News site like that. I might have to look into other people RSS feeds with full content into the site.
