open source research material

hi,

i am currently an undergrad at uni in the UK. I've been set the task of writing an essay discussing the rise in popularity of the open source movement against microsoft over the past decade.

does anyone know of any journals or books that would deal with the subject in hand.

thanx in advance

jk.

The primary site: http://www.opensource.org/
Eric S. Raymonds widely acclaimed book: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos...7515485-9313210

That's a good start... And then there's always www.google.com

ROFL! Well good luck, you're gonna have a bloody hard time. What kind of university are you attending anyway? The web was developed *by* scientists and academics *for* scientists and academics with the very purpose of making information sharing easier. Do you know if you're allowed to reference paperback editions? Or maybe only certain publishers are acceptable?

you can try looking at "the cathedral and the bazaar". it's more about the open source development process, but the author has written a number of other papers about open source. you can find it on the web (search www.google.com ) and it's available in book form with some of his other papers.

can you reference Buffy the Vampire Slayer?

I did a presentation on this subject last year in a General Education course .. got all my material off the web.. if your uni asserts that Richard Stallman is not a good enuff reference for your essay you might as well reference Bart Simpson and call it a day.

whether you can use this in your bibliography or not you should read this article by Richard Stallman... in fact .. it does say at the top "originally published in the book - Open Sources" .. so there ya go.
