I always thought the .org suffix was limited to non-profitmaking organisations.
How come http://www.pathtojoy.org pathtojoy.org is a huge Haagen Daas commercial ?

That's probably how it was intended, but it certainly isn't the case now. Register.com says:
There are no general restrictions relating to who can register a .com, .net or .org domain name. The following are suggested uses for the TLDs:
.com - commercial entities such as corporations.
.net - An abbreviation for network administration.
.org - An abbreviation for non-profit organizations and institutions
