Please take my survey...
Hey guys,
Sory for the intrusion. I need a few good developers to take a survey [http://www.ripplesw.com/] to help my software team and I determine which feature set to include in the first release of our initial product. The information will only be used by us, and we do not sell our list. Thanks ahead of time for the help. |

I think you should clarify the term "professionally" (and spell it right too
) -- it can be a somewhat relative term. I've gotten paid to do a few web sites, but I don't consider myself to be a professional. I guess that means I shouldn't check it? But the guys who paid me for my work would probably call me one. So maybe[ ] I design websites for a development firm as my career. If that's what you're after. Maybe I just think too much.

Also, the whole design of the survey is odd, in my opinion. It's basically all yes or no questions. It would be kind of hard to see any trends or get any good statistics, other than, well, 20% said Yes.
I would rather see questions like this: 1. I develop web sites: [ ] Professionally [ ] Freelance [ ] As a Hobby [ ] Just Starting etc... 2. I would like an editor thats: [ ] Text and WYSIWYG [ ] Text Only [ ] WYSIWYG Only [ ] Mind Controlled etc... It would be basically the same question, but now you can sort all of those and see the percentage that answered each question and look for trends. I have a survey program that's not 100% done yet, but it does a nice job of rolling up the answers into bar graphs and you can filter by any demographic that you ask. I'll let you know when it's finished if you want. ---John Holmes... Last edited by Sepodati : November 11th, 2002 at 01:45 PM. |

Thanks for your suggestions.
Everyone,
By the way, I'll update that page to remove the continue button. Sorry for the confusion. The survey will also be updated to make sure that it's a bit more direct, but also so it offers more choices to break up the demographics more properly. John Holmes, I would like very much to review your program when you are completed with it. Thank you for the offer. |

Multiple select on OS...
Joe Penn,
Actually, I just finished implementing the changes to the survey, that question was updated to use radio buttons instead of check boxes. Please enter your main development OS. This question relates to compatibility issues, thanks. |

I think that is where Joe was heading with multiple options here.
I personally do not have one main system that I develop on. It is more like 4. Split between windows and linux. This is to defeat compatability issues that you run into with only developing on one system. |

OS choices...
Everyone,
As it comes, I have recieved several emails in the past hour or so since I posted a reply to Joe Penn's question. Due to what seems to be extensive interest in this issue, I will change this question to allow for multiple possible answers. Before I do this, does anyone have suggestions for additional OS' that should be included. (Invariably, I am locking UNIX, and Linux dirivatives as UNIX/Linux, sorry to those die hard fans.) |

I would suggest splitting into at least three distinct groups:
*nix (Unix/Linux/BSD) Windows Mac Just my thoughts... |

OS Choices Updated
Everyone,
I've updated the survey to allow for multiple OS choices. If you've already taken the survey but would like to include information for more OS'. Feel free to retake the survey, but please mention in the ideas/comments field that you would prefer the newer survey response to take higher priority. You guys have helped refine this survey a lot. Thank you. |

Gender choices...
Tuxie,
I was hoping someone would laugh at that . We're mostly laid back here so, we try to bring humor to most things. However your privacy is very serious and is protected by us, and nothing that you tell us will be released to anyone else.As for the OS choices... please inform me as to what Cosmoe is and what allows it to differ from other OS' on the list. MacOS X, though it is based on UNIX, is not yet considered by many UNIX/Linux users to be such, and has been separated. It also happens to be the primary OS that we develop for. I may refine the OS choices to combine the NT based, and 9x based WinOS' to make things simpler. Thanks for the suggestion. |
