POLL: do 2 columns or 3 look best for this site layout?
I have a small site that I have converted from html to strict xhtml/css/php. I have worked up two separate designs, one that is 2 columns and one that is 3 columns. Please give 'em a look and let me know what you think works best in terms of usability, design appeal, etc. Other comments, tips, suggestions are gladly welcome.
2 COLUMN DESIGN 3 COLUMN DESIGN Thanks in advance for your time and opinions! ![]() |

Personally, if i had to choose between the two designs, i would choose the 2 column design. It is cleaner and appeals to me better. The smooth interface looks good. Keep up the good work. The tan color scheme is kind of bland, however; a different color scheme would not be too difficult to implement.

definitly the 2 columns the 3rd looks really out of place.

Thanks for comments. Colors are *easy* to switch thanks to CSS. I will look into other options...

I like the 2 column design best, the tree column design looks a bit like a pictogramme of a telephone.
Apart from that, nice work so far.

I think the two little columns on either side just looks weird, the 2 column one is more balanced.

Thanks for the comments all. This is the design I am going with (for now)- http://copperdog.org I have chosen it for the following reasons: 1) It is visually appealing w/ minimal eye candy - yes I am a minimalist who hates excessive graphics and eye candy. Though I might work on a side logo for the top bar. 2) It is simple to navigate - the nav column is on the right for a reason (graceful degradation for older browsers that don't handle CSS). 3) It is easy to maintain - everything is modularized. 4) FWIW: Both columns are dynamic - they will expand vertically as more content is added. Making them fixed lengths is difficult as I don't know what will ultimately fill up either. Now I just need to take the next few days and convert all of the articles and guides from the old site into a format for the new one layout! |

Maybe its just my computer/browser, but I see a lot of empty space at the top of the page with ie5 and 1028x768 resolution.
Other than that, it does look good. I like the new colors better than the old green. |

Thanks for the heads up. By design, there is a 50pixel border at the top and on the left of the page. What ypu are seeing is correct but *easily* changable. |

Well, the way I see it displayed, the empty space is nearly a full screen, so you might want to look into it. Also, while I'm nitpicking, you say "a collection of... funnier on-liners". Might want to make that "one-liners".
![]() Nice site though |
