    A Question About Statistical Analysis

Okay this is rather off-topic but, for those of you who look at web statistics and use them to make decisions, I have a question our resident number cruncher asked us: is it fair to compare smartphone/tablet statistics with desktop browser statistics? If the answer is 'yes', what comparisons actually mean anything?

Just wondering if anyone had any insight. I'm just a designer, but apparently our colleague... well he didn't think highly of our answers.

I honestly have no idea what you mean by this. How could it be considered "unfair" to analyze statistical data?

Are you asking whether you should expect to see the same number of visitors on mobile OS's as you do on non-mobile OS's? If so, it depends on your target audience, but most sites see far fewer mobile visitors than non-mobile visitors.

To be absolutely honest, I have no idea what was meant by question either. I'm not really a statistics person, I have nothing to do with the logs or the data in them. I'm just posing the question as it was posed to us. I presume at some point it's going to be explained to me by the person who was asking, but really I'm just the guy who drafts up graphics to specs. I was kind of just seeing if it made sense to neutral observer.

Ask them for clarification. The word "fair" has a million meanings. The numbers still "count," if that's what they mean. One visit from a desktop browser is equivalent to one visit from a mobile browser (though as they should know chrome on the desktop reports false hits).
