Brown is great for programming, or so I hear.

I've heard good things about Brown as well. Its among the huge number of schools down a notch from MIT and Stanford, that are wonderful.
In this space, being the 20th greatest school is not bad, even the top 50 are amazing. Note, I have no clue if one school, say Brown, is at any specific number, after the the top three, I'm not sure it matters. |

Credentials are great. They can give you a chance you could not otherwise expect.
I would suggest that you endeavor to be good, or better. One doesn't want to be fired by the cognoscenti, you know.

yes, in the market they are highly valued. I tend to think significantly over valued, IMHO, etc. Five years after you graduate, no one cares which university you went to, or what your grade point was. They care about what you can do. And who says that you can do something. |

Someone saying you can do something (a recommendation) IS a credential. Probably the best there is. Woiked fer me.

Don't forget to add Princeton's CS program to the list. Always top notch.
