Recommend me a school in the US with a great CS program

I am wanting to get my bachelors in computer science and I am looking for suggestions as to where to go. If you have any positive or negative experience with a particular school, please post it here.

Send a message via Google Talk to f'lar
There are a LOT of good CS programs in this country. Of course, there are a lot of bad ones, too. Can you narrow it down a bit for us?

You will get lots of arguments about which is best, but MIT, Stanford and UC Berkeley are always in the top five. They attract the best and the brightest from the whole world, they are hard and the competition is fierce to get in, and to stay in.

There are at least 100 great CS programs in the US, and I expect another 100 outside the US.

f'lar agrees: I hear Harvard and Yale aren't bad either, if you've got the coin. I'm also fond of
my alma mater (wonder if the link will work here?)

... and difficult to get into. UC Berkeley for example only admits about 20% of their applicants and the overwhelming majority (75%) of those applicants accepted are California residents ...

I don't know the numbers, but for these and many others, not only do they accept only a tiny percent of those that apply, but only the best and brightest apply. Mean SAT scores over 2000 are not impressive. I don't know, but I'd expect that their mean SAT are over 2200 [wrong, see next post], and since 2400 is max, that's really serious competition.

No guidance counselor worth anything would have a kid with 1600 SATs even apply to top tier schools. Well, maybe, if they were president of the class, lead in the plays, debate team, star quarterback and several other things.

Opps, I guessed wrong. should have done some research.

Don't have the CS program itself, which I expect to be higher, but the 2007 class at Berkeley has a mean SAT composite of 2029.

Stanford's numbers, from their site, are as amazing as I guessed.
http://www.stanford.edu/home/statistics/

They accept only about 10% of the applications they receive.

SAT Critical Reading SAT Math SAT Writing
700-800 60.80% 67.21% 60.04%

This says that 60 % of their accepted folks have over 700 in at least one of the three SAT categories. And nearly 70% have over 700 in Math.

Wow.

Old SAT had two parts, each max of 800, so 1600 was tops. Now there are three, still max 800, so max is now 2400.
Same basic scale, 500 is mean, each 100 numbers is a standard deviation above. So 800 in one test means you beat 99% of the rest. 700 is two stdev, or higher than 95.45% of the folks taking the test, which is self selected, so its way way above 95% smarter than the average bear.

I suspect they'll do anything to make the current crop appear to be as smart or smarter than previous crops, despite the dire failure of the educational system.

Unfortunately, it ainnagonnawoik in the long run. You can fool some of the people all the time, but you can't fool the global economy (and we ARE into global economy days) very long.

The fact that the teat-suckers are the forum posters of today is entirely indicative.

For those of you who never visit the forums that deal with questions that aren't are concerned with merely bull**** (lounge and outhouse, and there are a lot of you), let me say this: a substantial number of the questioners are looking for free solutions to homework problems.

Some aren't, but they're so uninformed (you can read "dumb" if you like) that they don't realize that they can find a solution by methods that are much more productive than appealing to a forum and waiting for an answer.

I could just **** and fall back in it.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go take a dump. As soon as I find my scraper and some powerful disinfectant.

Wait! The world is entitled to a college education. Everyone should get in, get a degree, and get a great paying, no work job.

Why are you so grumpy? Don't you know this is how the world works these days?
