RIAA filed a case against a 12 yr old girl!?

File-sharers undaunted by crackdown

Report shows only 5 percent dip in unauthorized music
downloading despite record industry suits.
September 19, 2003: 12:23 PM EDT

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Use of the most popular
Internet file-sharing service declined only 5 percent
last week despite a high-profile crackdown by the U.S.
recording industry on unauthorized music trading
online, the latest data shows.

Around 4.23 million U.S. home users logged onto the
KaZaa service, down from 4.47 million the week before,
Internet researcher Nielsen//Netratings told Reuters
Friday. Usage on three other popular file-sharing
services -- Morpheus, iMesh, and BearShare, stayed
about the same from the previous week.

Since the Recording Industry of America began its
campaign against the file sharing services in late
June, the popularity of the online services has been
sharply reduced. KaZaa has lost more than 40 percent
of its more than 7 million users it had at the start
of June, according to Nielsen//Netratings.

The recording industry's long-term goal is to move
users of services like KaZaa to industry-sanctioned
services such as Apple's iTunes site, which charges
users a fee for downloading music, a spokesman said.

"This is a long-term campaign and we're going to
continue until the message gets out," RIAA spokesman
Jonathan Lamy said. "We're not so much interested in
the day-to-day tick-tock."

Earlier this month, the RIAA sued 261 people --
including a 12-year-old girl -- for distributing
hundreds of thousands of songs over the Internet
without permission, and warned that it would continue
filing more lawsuits.

Have seen the reports everywhere. The 12 yea olds Mom settled for a few grand.

Here is a link to a similar story. Don't 100% trust the article.

Durwood Pickle sounds too suspect....

One interesting side to the DMCA is that gay porn studios are now getting the names of downloaders off ISP's, without having any intention of filing a case against them.

they use it as a good way to find out who is your target audience. As no judge ect has to server the application your privacy has gone again to the marketers.....

But then it had with 'rolling' wire taps, 'sneek and peek' searches ect under the Patriot Act.

I don't kid myself about real privacy online anymore. If I want to do something that I don't want anyone else to know, I'll go to an internet cafe. Some of them have a computer or two with a CD burner so basically I never really download music from home. I don't even have broadband anyway. Whereas my local internet cafe does and serves the purpose just right for all and any downloads - even the legal ones

PS:
I'm new, so hi everyone!

PPS:
Is it at all possible to file a law-suit against a minor? As far as I'm aware, here in Britain if you're under 14, you can't be sued by anyone. I don't even think criminal cases are any trouble for under 14's.

PPPS:
Technofear. I have just fallen in love with your signature

Wondering if there's any Germans here now. This has a certain irony to it, considering I'm sitting not far away from the river Clyde in Glasgow. For those not totally in the know about semi-recent Scottish history... this area got blown to sh*t by a "blitz" attack from the Germans in WWII

Better be off now. Flying to Germany tomorrow morning. Have a nice night everyone!
