mtatkns got it. This is ~30 year old (and stupid...) riddle. This:
Quote:
There are three commonly used words in the English language which end on '-gry'. 'Angry' and 'hungry' are two of them.
Is just a miscellaneous (and erroneous) statement.
This:
Quote:
What is the third word in the ENGLISH language?
Is the actual question and can be rewritten more clearly as:
Quote:
What is the third word in the phrase, "the ENGLISH language"?
I hate that stupid riddle... LOL... mttatkns cheated.. but he still answered it.
Quote:
In my dictionary,
Not in mine
Quote:
'Three' is the third word in your question
This is one possible answer that people have submitted to the riddle, but unfortunately it's too hard to actually substantiate because the question is only the second sentence. The rest of the riddle is really meaningless garbage to confuse you.

A good mastery of the english language OR....
.... a good mastery of useless trivia
floccinaucinihilipilification
It's something to do with deciding that something is worthless... it's also the longest non-medical word in the english language IIRC - keep em coming!
[edit]
Errp... you got me on the palindrome... gonna have to think about this one...

Hmm, 29 letters, how many words have 29 letters?
Not that many probably... I must admit I can't find it in my (small) dictionary nor did I find it in dictionary.com, but according to my sources it's a valid, though not commonly used, english word. Key to success is to think of why I choose that word in particular in the first place...
Anyway, the bridge-ridle is much more fun imo

The valid longest word in the English language is: antidisestablishmentarianism, only 28 letters.
So, if you are talking about non-technical or non-scientific words, this is the longest word, meaning no English word is 29 letters of length.
There is another English word that Marilyn Monroe popularized: supercalifragilisticexpealodocious - don't know if I "spelled" it right. it simply means happy, right?

from my link:
Quote:
The Guinness Book of Records in 1992 (and subsequent editions) declares the "longest real word" in the English language to be floccinaucinihilipilification at 29 letters. Defined as the act of estimating as worthless, its usage has been recorded as far back as 1741. In recent times its usage has been recorded in the proceedings of the US Senate (Senator Jesse Helms used the word in 1999 during the debate on the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty [Randolph V. Cinco]) and at the White House (by Press Secretary Mike McCurry in his December 6, 1995, White House Press Briefing).

The only reason I knew that was because I went looking one day for "antidisestablishmentarianism" to see if it really was the longest word, and, lordy be, it wasn't. It's pretty easy to recognize that screwy word once you've seen it once because of all of the i's, but I had to go to google to remember how to spell it
