Santorum.... Hated Him For Awhile

Rick Santorum (unfortunately, my "representative" in the gov't... why is it that none of my representatives in gov't seem to represent me?), in case you didn't notice, recently came under fire for basically trying to say that gay, consensual sex in the privacy of one's home is the same as incest (among other things). For God's sake... the actual transcript of his babbling can undoubtedly be had through Google... don't look at me... go find it yourself!

Anyway... that makes me hate him... but here's why I started hating him in the first place...

I sent an e-mail to his office about CIPA not that terribly long ago, and, low and behold, I never got a response. In fact, I didn't even get an auto response. However.... I DID start to get all sorts of neat stuff from him asking me very nicely to:

1) Give him money
or
2) Vote for him
or
3) Both

Idiot. As if I didn't get enough junk mail from stupid people trying to sell me big steaming piles of bull****.

I'm not actually going to comment on the issue of him being a homphobic busybody because:

1) He's free to have his own opinions, no matter how stupid they are
and
2) He's doing a well enough job of stomping his career into the dirt on his own

2) Isn't the KKK headquartered in PA now? Isn't one of PA's nicknames "Pennsyltucky"?

My point with 2 is that I'm not entirely convinced it will hurt him. West PA is EXTREMELY conservative, and there are counties in PA that are the whitest places in the states.

I really hope that cooler heads prevail in PA, but I'm not holding my breath.

Please don't think I'm too down on PA (hey, we have a vacation home in the Poconos, Lake Ariel) but it is a WEIRD state.

Yea, he's a senator - I mean "representative" in the sense that he represents PA in that portion of Congress along with Specter (who at least has an autoresponder on his e-mail telling you how to get ahold of him if you really need to), not in the sense that he's a member of the House.

I live unsettlingly close to Dillsburg, PA, a real hotbed for KKK activity. We hit a restaraunt outside of Carlisle once (not too far away) and I counted nearly a dozen big, white or silver Cadillacs outside of it with license plates from:

PA, TX, KY, AK, and GA. We have never dined at that establishment....

And, actually, a lot of Western PA is still fairly conservative, but only because it's very old (because PA sucks for jobs and all the smart kids move out..).

York is the real bad spot... they have (at least) yearly riots of varying sizes break out down there because of dumbass KKK rallies. It's utterly ridiculous. They just got done prosecuting a black man for shooting a white office back in the race riots in York in the 60's, and not a year ago Charlie Robinson, the former York mayor, was acquitted of killing a black girl in the same riots. They did, however, convict other men for the shooting.

Frankly.. I think most of the people around here are either in-bred mutants or idiots But that's just me.... (a cooler head, I am not )

Alright.. let me make one thing clear: if you want to cite a series of ridiculously edited books ("Religious beliefs getting in the way of your life? No problem! Just rewrite the religion!") supposedly written by a bunch of people that can't even be verified to have ever existed, by all means, go for it - that's your perogative. However, bear in mind that for myself and a lot of other people, the Bible and pretty much all other religious texts are NOT valid references for substantiating a viewpoint (among other things). The more often you cite an absurdely biased source like that, the less respect I'll have for your point of view, and the more I'll believe you're just a bigot grasping at straws because you want a finger to point to make yourself feel better.

CONVINCE me with FACTS that whatever miscellaneous point you are arguing is valid. Nothing else will do, because I tend to seperate myself from social and religious views on this sort of thing whenever I can.

For a great example:

SOCIAL BIAS: Incest is icky.

Personally, I feel that's true, but it's still not acceptable evidence that incest should be illegal.

FACT: Incest can (and does) lead to crippling and/or fatal genetic mutations.

That is a fact, and, actually, one that happens to convince me 100% that sexual intercourse, consensual or otherwise between similar enough genetic partners should be illegal.

However... that doesn't cover ALL sex acts between similar genetic partners... frankly, I will admit that I do hold a (major) bias against such things... however, it's not my business to step in if the only people who will get hurt from doing it is the people who agree to do it, and, frankly, I don't know that I'd want to get close enough to the sort of people who would do such things to make sure they're not doing it anyway... ick.

Anyway, to the issue at hand.

I figure you've made the initial attempt to connect on a religious level - you've failed (which is fine... there's nothing wrong with stating your religious views.. I'm just warning you: don't try to persist with them as if they were hard facts). If you care to try again, go for it, but I'm not going to argue with anyone's religious or social bias against an entire group of people, because there's no point in it. If you can't stick to the facts, you don't have an argument, so why bother trying to convince anyone?

Well, Ctb, I can't respect anyone with such disregard for what our nation was founded on.

We've already had the discussion and you never came up with any facts to support that position, eclipsed. If you believe the US was founded ON christianity then cite some facts to support it or stop spouting it as fact

cant say i agree with his opinion but refrences like "in god we trust" may be his support for his argument.

Before posting something I suggest you do some research. Why don't you look up WHEN those words were added to US currency? While you are at it, look up when "under god" was added to the pledge of allegiance.

Oh no! Whatever shall I do!? Why, I've never been told by an illogical religious zealot spouting what, in logical terms, amounts to an enormous, steaming pile of nonsense, that I'm "evil", "contemptible", "damned", "going to hell", "the antichrist" (I kid not..), and now I can add: "unrespectable". Gee, I'm crushed.

Oh, and I'm sorry, I forgot that the irrational fears and hate mongering of a (potentially small) subset of the Christian religion should be grounds for legislation against an entire group of people who were minding their own business. I think if that's the case, maybe we should introduce legislation to deport Christians to Iran on behalf of the small group of lunatics out there who believe it's their holy duty to fight Christians? Hmmm?

You know why so many people don't like Christians these days? It's not because there's some huge Anti-Christian movement going on, it's because of obnoxious people like you who feel that your BELIEFS and personal experiences should be grounds for meddling in other peoples' affairs. Most of the people I've met who claimed some religious affiliation were very down to earth and sensible. They would occasionally make overtures to me to "give it a try" (why does selling a religion sound like a drug deal... odd), but they kept to themselves and spoke up when appropriate. When they DID speak up, they made it clear that they were speaking on the grounds of their beliefs, but they also made attempts to persuade with FACTS, not just tossing out passages from some silly story book. It's those latter people who cause so much ill will toward religious groups, and, rightly so. If you can't argue based on logic, then you might as well just go argue with someone else who knows the Bible, Koran, whatever until you're blue in the face, because you won't accept anything but an emotional or personal proof anyway. I, on the other hand, won't accept anything but a logical proof, so I'll end my rant here, and stop wasting both of our time.

However, on the extreme opposite end of things, here's something else that ticked me off recently:

A Shippensburg school aide was suspended for 1 year w/o pay for wearing a small cross necklace. She was warned several times to take it off or tuck it in while at school, but refused.

Now... I find this extremely annoying, but I will defer to others' thoughts before I share my own any further....
