Say 'Hi' to the new guy

Greetings All--

I'm taking the plunge back into C++ and decided to expand my online horizons a bit. Been hanging out over at Website Abstraction (now Javascriptkit.com) for awhile now and heard there were a lot of good, smart folks in here. I know a few WA people hang out here, as well.

I am also the coordinator of www.CommemorateWTC.com and we're still looking for developers, if you're interested in lending your talent. It is easily one of the best WTC sites on the web, and we're preparing to expand it to actively support several specific relief causes.

A few other things, though that'll work for now. Good to meet everyone. I look forward to working with and learning from all of you. Eventually I'll be useful in here - I promise!

Hi,

'Eventually' hmmm, there's always something a person on their first day can teach someone who has been around too many days.

A valid question. Nothing wrong with WA, though a couple of things going on over there recently concern me.

Aside from the increasing uninformed opinionation which seems to be creeping in, I am troubled by George changing the site's name recently to JavascriptKit.com. The transition seems easy enough and more intent. However, sadly enough, I honestly see javascript on its way out the door.

Thanks to the new javascript viruses rapidly showing up, combined with what looks like no clear resolution on browser adherence to W3C - or anyone's - recommendations for javascript standards (which I don't neccessarily consider a bad thing, btw), it's only a matter of time before people become too scared or frustrated and start realizing every browser out there has a way to disable its javascript support.

Where does that leave us? Serverside technologies. For this reason I'm thinking it prudent to branch out quite a bit; master C++ first then PHP. Those are my programming goals for the year. Get those down and you really don't need javascript for anything.

And Al, not to sound crass: The name's welo rather than weso. I spent a lot of time thinking it up!

I'm just wrapping up the final pieces of a WYSIWYG editor for our clients to use when updating their websites, and it's written entirely in javascript (or jscript I guess) thanks to the wonderful Explorer DOM. It's working really nice, and I must say that javascript is incredibly useful for making powerful administration interfaces for our customers simply by mimicking what they are used to (drag and drop for example).

If I didn't have javascript I would have to either rely on very clumsy interfaces or to write separate GUI software for our systems, and that would take much more time and be much harder to sell.

Just wanted everyone to know I'm still ghosting in here while getting a feel for the place. Definitely a lot to absorb.

Ever have one of those weeks where you work all the time and it seems nothing actually gets accomplished? That's where I've been. Sheesh.
