search engine placement
Hey, lets say you have a web site that's great, and better than tons of those .com's (the website you have isn't a .com). Would the search engine rank them higher than you because of the fact that they have a .com and you don't, or will thank rank it more or less on content. It's just with my college class I got web space with tons of room, plus all the extras for free. So I hesitate in buying a .com if I can use this and still get the same placement I would.

Not by the rules they won't. Check out internet.com's www.searchenginewatch.com , they have quite a number of papers about the whole search process.

placement
Ahhhh, finally a post in my field.
.com's really don't hold any more relevance than a .net as a domain extension, you won't be penalized so it's ok to go with a .net. Besides, all the good domains are taken. Bonus: a link from a .edu has been known to boost rankings on Google. Just a little SEO for you. Dan Trapp webmaster@keywordbuys.com keywordbuys.com |

The ending of your domain doesn't boost you, as was said earlier. Yes, it is correct about the .edu boost. If a site links to you from:
.gov .ac.uk .edu .gov.uk etc.. in other words any official governmental/educational establishment, then you'll have your rank boosted. If you link to them then it also boosts your position. |

well I meant something like this:
http://jupiter.cs.dixie.edu/~dpetersen/ Would it penalize me cause it's a sub-domain? about your bonus... since the frist of it ends with a .edu would it give me higher than lol. |
