Should I decline a good offer because they continue to mispell my name?
Well folks Here is the thang: I have two excellent internship offers, one from a fast-growing health care company where I did my previous internship, and one from the world's most respected company.
I was leaning towards the second offer only because it will broaden my horizon and give me more exposure. However, they continue to spell my name wrong in documents, emails, etc. Even in the official offer letter they screwed my name big time everywhere. I called them to notify them of their mistake (albeit I didn't tell them the correct spelling), and I have just received an email with my name mispelled again - and there is no excuse: My name IS spelled correctly in the email to them, so when they reply they have no execuse to get it wrong. I am rather disappointed in their mistake. Now granted I don't have a easily memorable name BUT they repeatedly get it wrong even after I told them about it. Am I being harsh to consider rejecting their offer because of this? |

First thing, congrats on the two offers
![]() I would take the one that feels right, forget about the spelling mistake, unless your name is something like MR DUNT Take the one that offers you the most,, the person that made the spelling mistake is most likely a secretary and not going to be your boss.. Worlds most repected company? I would be interested to see who you think that is?

Indeed, most respected by who? Either way, fight the machine from within, make them learn your name, or just start calling everyone by the wrong name and when they correct you, correct their spelling. Or just mispronounce their names, even if they're common, stress syllables incorrectly and accent stuff that shouldn't be. -b

on world's most respected company - Well GE is/was Fortune world's most admired company as well as World's most respected company from Financial Times, so I consider them the world's most respected company in general

I wouldn't sweat the mispell, my last name gets butchered more times than it is spelled right. Even friends I've had for 10+ years still spell it wrong.

I have two solid tiers of acquaintences, ones who can pronounce my name right (meaning I've been there to correct them no less than three times) and those that can spell it right on the fly (yeah, sometimes takes years).
Take the job, GE is half financial and half industrial, so it's a pretty solid, respected place (at least until you get there). I know a guy who's worked there for many years, travels a lot, has enjoyed working there so far as I ever heard (long hours sometimes, but where doesn't make you do that sometimes). My name gets misspelled all the time. It ends with 2 N's, but people (as you can probably imagine) usually leave off the second N unless I correct them. This isn't a big deal usually (it's just annoying), but I had to get it corrected at work recently because my employee ID file got erased (and rebuilt, eventually) and I had to have my name spelled correctly for my paycheck, etc.
So if it's something crucial like your paycheck, get them to correct it. If it's just "Dear Mr. Xyz" then you shouldn't turn down the offer based on that. You could always go to extreme measures, like wear clothing saying what your name is... ![]() |

Unless your name is Fussy Galore and they keep mispelling it .. I'd say get your foot in the door, the name will be corrected automajically when you hand in your SS card anyway..

My name is Kirk Fickert. I have had both names spell and pronounced wrong all my life. I remember my 3rd grade teacher kept marking my spelling test wrong because on her attendance sheet my last name was Flickert. It took a phone call from my parents to make her believe otherwise.
I still don't have my college diploma. It was spelled Kirt A. A. Vickert. The second was Kirk Flickert, and the third attempt Kirk H. Fickert. Gotta love I spent like $60k on my education there and they can't spell my name correctly. I just got a phone call from the Alum org last week wanting donations and I said, "When you give me a diploma with my name spelled correctly, we'll see". Bottom line, its corperate burocracy. Accept the best offer and if your name isn't correct, you can fillout the paperwork and bitch at them after you accept...well politely bitch.
