well... when im coding the music i listen to depends on the current mood im in (can be from slow and soft ballads/instrumentals to hard and ear-crunching rock). but when im really focused on my work, i dont care what's playing as long as its not one of them f**ing boy bands, that would really throw me off and i wont be able to work anymore.

Re: Sleepless Nights
Well, I can tell you from the married side of things, more times than not the 9 - 5 rule is held firm. I am lucky in a way though, my wife also works and she works 2nd shift, so I can pick up the keyboard again after 8:00 and code for a while longer. But that has been drawn down even less now that I have started back to school. I, unfortunately can't stay up past 12-ish or I wont be able to start the next day since I do have to have a somewhat fresh mind for the combination of school and IO(Idiot Operators) at work.
![]() As far as tips in helping to adjust? Grab a notepad and have it near where you will spend most of you time at when you aren't at the computer. When you get an idea that makes you want to code, shorthand some of it out on the paper so that you don't forget it. Just don't start jotting something down while she is talking to you (among other things ).As far as music, I usually listen to a little of it all except country music. Can't stand that crap. You would be surprised how many notebooks I have filled up in the past year just by jotting down a few lines. |

Also from the married side of things
As soon as you get a life (read: wife?), things will change, especially if it also means kids. I prefer to work late nights as well, but the 9 - 5 part definitly works better with your family. Though when it's necessary, I'll bring some work with me and sit at home instead, and often find that I'm more productive at home than at work. With or without music...
Things that will help you in changing your lifestyle: your wife... ![]() Music: Whatever ranging from silence to heavily distorted grinding guitars. Just not one of them boy bands... //NoXcuz

Can I just ask, what the heck is 'Tool' is that some kinda band in the US?
Well, as I have said, my fiance reads these boards so I have to be extremely careful what I say But I am definetly the one 'wearing the trousers' in the relationship, so I could put my foot down and say, hey I'm working nights end of story, but I think I could do with out the headaches which are sure to follow As far as music while coding, I generally just have the local radio station on, during the night they have a phone in for all the night workers to choose the music that gets played, so I set the volume low and concentrate on the work until I hear or notice a song I really like then turn up the volume. The only time it goes off is when some moron requests a boy band song!

Old joke: On their wedding night, a groom takes off his pants and tells his wife to put them on. Of course, they are much to big and she says, "I can't wear your pants." He replies, "That's right. I'm the one who wears the pants in this family and don't forget it!" With that the bride takes off her panties and throws them to him with instructions to put them on. He tries but they won't go past his knees. He says, "I can't get into your panties," to which she replies, "That's right, and you won't either until your f**king attitude changes!"

Well, I don't listen to Tool anymore anyway because the disc got all scratched up. Now I don't have ANYTHING to listen to. To get a new CD I'd have to turn around, walk 4 feet to the stereo, pick up a CD, come back, put it in the tray, start the player... ugh... sooooo much work...
Rod.. Good one I'm a little young yet to be commenting on the marriage thing perhaps, but I have been dating a girl for the last (nearly) 5 years, so we may as well be married anyway. She goes to school during the week though so she usually sacks out around 11:00 when she's here. I just get up and plop down in front of my screen and plug away until she wakes up and leaves... I might note that she never seems too impressed with anything I've done while she's sleeping either ![]() |

Music while coding...
I'm glad I'm not the only one that listens to Tool while coding.
I find A Perfect Circle a little better cuz its somewhat mellower (don't know if thats a real word or not). If you are a fan of Tool, try coding to APC. The music that results in most-productive coding outcomes: -Tool / APC -System of a Down -Pink (how the hell does that fit in there?) -Disturbed Sometimes, just SOMETIMES, I code while listening to Bryan Adams. ![]() |

Did anyone notice how this thread slowly moved frop 'sleepless nights' to 'what I listen while code'? Ok, let me comment then on that too.
Most of my coding is done away from the house and in the team envornment. So much for music while working... But when I do something for myself or code little bit at home then I put either R&B or dance/rave kind of music. As so many others, I stay away from boy bands and most of pop music.

Coding whilst listening to disturbed?
That conjours up visions of a program which threatens to smash all your house up and chop your power cable in half. System of a down - manic program which will never shut down, even when you try to end it from task manager it just presents you with a message that says "hahahahahahaha RAAAA!" Pink - You produce a program which is exponentially greedy and exploits other programs my making them look good and making loads of money from them even though the code and output is actually a bunch of arse. ( )uh oh, This has become a rant about the pop music industry!

Most productive for me is roughly 45 minutes of coding in silence after some heavy brainstorming. Besides, I live 2 blocks away from the beach and nothing can match watching sunset or sunrise over the ocean. Awesome thinking going over there.
