You can do custom voices in it - but it takes away from the real players voice.
Its funny tho because on bad shots, some of the players (the same ones that do on tour) will freak out. The game is really intense man. Its great because it has integrated voice chat (one of the first games to come out with integrated chat, I think '99 was the first one) and the game runs as smooth a butter - even if another user is on a slow connection. The online tournies are intense - usally thousands of people participate in them. They also have the VGT or Virtual Golf Tour - they pay out cash prizes in excess of $50k. My best shot ever in the game (links 2000) was a 186 yard eagle while participating in the VGA... |

I like games where you have to use logic to solve a puzzle. For some people, this may be too much like programming since the same skills are involved. Many years ago I found a simple but tough little game called Marble. Basically you have a grid and a bunch of widgets. The widgets affect the direction a marble will travel when it is rolled through the grid. The widgets are very dynamic in that they can change behavior or move to a new location when struck by a marble.
There is a "hidden" grid with several widgets on it. Your goal is to drag widgets onto a blank grid so that your grid behaves exactly like the grid you can't see. Whenever you roll a marble through your grid, it shows you where your marble should have come out if it had been rolled through the hidden grid. Basically you have to test a combination, "debug" your solution, refactor and test again until any marble rolled through your grid always comes out in exactly the same place as it would on the hidden grid. Definitely a game that programmers will either love because it uses their strengths or they'll hate because it brings back bad memories of programs they couldn't get to behave properly. If you ever want to test someones ability to use logic to solve a dynamic problem, make them play of few rounds of this game. Other than that, I actually like some of the old arcade games that come with most Linux distributions these days. It brings back fond memories of my wasted teenage years... |

Has anyone played the America's Army: Operations game put out by the U.S. Army? It's a free (huge) download, if anyone wants to check it out.
I'm not "recruiting", mind you, but it is an awesome game. It's a first person shooter type. You go through some training initially to get familiar with the weapons, then you move into missions. The idea is that each mission has an Offense and Defense side with up to 10 or so people on each side. Defense is trying to prevent the Offense team from breaking through and getting to a certain point or points (freeing a prisoner, turning valves, destroying computers, etc). You get multiple weapons and machine guns, frag grenades, smoke grenades, night vision, binoculars, etc. You'll find yourself running and low crawling up behind cover to hide from thrown grenades. The big emphasis is on team work, obviously. You can't be a hero and run through shooting things up. You will die easily. A combination of throwing smoke, laying down suppressive fire, and moving forward by teams is required to accomplish the mission. It's very realistic. The only "con" I have for the game is that it's hard to meet up with someone online and play together. There's no way to "talk" outside of the missions to coordinate which one you'll do. Hopefully they improve that sometime. Interested to hear what other people think if they've played it... ---John Holmes... |

dcaillouet, you might be interested to know there's an updated version of that Marble game you're talking about in 3D. I forgot the name, but I'll look through my stash of CDs to see if I can find it. Yeah it was a very good puzzle game.
Well, I used to be a big Q3 CTF/TA guy, but haven't touched it in a while. Also was into JK II, but currently my current playlist revolves around Warcraft III, Raven Shield, and some Diablo II. I'm highly anticipating the following games though: Half life II (the physics and graphics demos have to be seen to be believed) Doom III Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne (expansion) Halo for PC (if it has coop mode). BTW for anyone sharing any common gaming interest that wants to some multiplayer send me a private message/email/AIM whatever. -b

I paly a lot of network games (in coop only)
System Shock was a classic. Heroes of Might and Magic series for strategy. Operation Flashpoint for coop custom missions. Learnt to config networks / null modems to play DOOM. >>nobody here plays Total War (Shogun or Medieval)? And now Vikings. Not bad unless your general gets a rep for cowardice........

sorry, but I really dislike today's 3d games, except the racing ones. I stay away as far as possible. I'm an old timer, you might say.

I noticed no one posted Morrowind, that's a great game. Currently, I'm wasting my time playing GTA Vice City and SSX Tricky on my PS2.
