    "Social" software development

    Hi,

I'm looking for something like rentacoder.com but in a non-profit way. I don't know the exact English term, maybe 'social' isn't correct but I would like to write some code for someone who needs it without them paying for it.

Let's say some organization which helps homeless people and needs some a fund raising website or something similar. Does anyone know anything like this?

    Thanks a lot!

Unless you live in the sticks, there are likely to be a number of charitable organizations where you live.

Many comprise a joint effort between religious organizations to help the homeless. There are also individual churches, food banks, etc.

Many of these can use some help in reducing their paperwork by going electronic. Many have computers, but don't know how to use them except for email. Some, no doubt, could also use a website.

    Check locally.

Have you had a look in the Project Help Wanted forum here on Dev Shed ?

The English term is "open source".

You can contribute to lots of open source projects at SourceForge.net.

Oh good Lord (preach the gospel of Open Source, baby, it's the answer to EVERYTHING!) ...

No, he's looking for a cooperative (coop) that is set up to help non-profits with webby - techy stuff.

I'm sure they exist. I'm too lazy to Google...

P.S. Death Goddess, make sure that your black lipstick IS tested on small furry animals, it makes it all the more "gothy".

Maybe I am reading his thread wrong, but it looks like he is looking to write code for a non profit organization, I do not think he is looking for someone to do work for him. Though now I'm really just confused. I'm sure something like it exists though whichever way he is trying to go, everything exists on the internet.

Seemed pretty clear to me. He want's to help some charitable organization, at no charge.

I say again, work locally. That way, you know whom you're helping (unless you want to get into nationally-known or internationally-known organizations).

To hell with Google, in this instance. Resort to the phone book, newspapers, or word of mouth from someone else who is into this stuff. Believe me, there is NO shortage of deserving organizations, and no shortage of people needing help.

Just go to your favorite church, synagogue, thrift shop, soup kitchen and ask a person. Network.

As 'grin says, there is no shortage of places where you can help

Thanks for all the replies! No, most of you are right, I'm looking to contribute as a coder to help someone out, I don't need the help for myself and yes, open source is a small part of that but open source does not mean you are not making profit and doen't have to be for a 'good cause'.

Maybe the 'go local' suggestion is the best one and a good check to make sure the cause is indeed something you want to work for.

Agencies who will increase their ability to help because of your work won't give a rat's *** if it's open source or not.
