Sore eyes&neck
Don't you ever wish that there was someone to give you back rub while you were coding. (I'd prefer a hottie in bikinis) My neck is killing me + I have "red eye" syndrome all the time. Similar problems anyone ???
It would definetly be easier to work in a warehouse carrying stuff from point A to point B.And then you need to do sports in the evening since all day long you just sit on your behind... Miska P.S. Negative thinking rocks! |

It is something that drives me mad - my neck and shoulders do hurt, and my eyes get quite tired.. however I do go to the gym every other day, and I usually finish off slumping in the steam room for a while. It helps a lot.
H0t ch1x would be a bonus, tho ![]() christo

Here are some Occupational Health and Safety tips.
1. You have to make sure that your monitor is at a decent refresh rate and resolution. You should not be straining to read the text and the screen should not be flickering. Both of these will cause sore eyes. Also working in an airconditioned environment, like an office, can also make things worse since the air is a lot drier. 2. Make sure you are not sitting slouched in your chair, your back should be straight and your screen at the right level. - If you need to look down upon your screen then your neck will hurt. - If your chair doesnt offer the right back support then your back will hurt. - If its not at the right height then your shoulders will start to hurt. If you work for a company they should provide you with a proper chair and desk. I use a monitor stand to make sure its at the right height and have my chair adjusted correctly. If you are unsure if your work environment is correct for you or how to make it that way then check with your boss about getting someone in for a work station assesment. They check how you sit and will advise you and adjust things for you to ensure that everything is correct. |

Yep, that's all good advice and you should follow it. But somehow I have the feeling that no matter how you sit and look at the screen, if you do it for 14 hours per day, then you're still gonna get sore neck and eyes. *LOL*
BTW. Are you the great german soccer goalkeeper Andreas Koepke ??? |

LOL, just asking cos there actually was a goalkeeper named Andreas Koepke who played in german national team and was part of the team who won the european championships in 1996.
Maybe he is the next famous A. Koepke, due to his g0atkeeping abilities. ![]() |

ergonomics (as Andreas mentioned earlier) is the key, and you would be surprised as to how well they can improve the soreness/eye problems. Actually, one of the most uncomfortable looking chairs is one of the best. Something like http://www.kneelsit.com/, but the ones that I have used previously don't have a back on them. The way you sit can make all of the difference, 4 or 14 hours wouldn't make a big difference.

I am German too but am not the famous Goalie
I did play soccer as part of a school team for quite a few years but thats all in the past now. Those chairs Onslaught pointed out are quite good but I have bad knees so after about an hour I would be in pain. I really need to have my legs stretched out. I have a footrest under my desk for that reason. Without it my legs wouldnt be at the correct angle. |

I read somewhere that it's also important that your chair have arm rests to prevent your back and shoulders from getting sore, in addition to everything else already mentioned.

I had a chair with arm rests and ended up ditching it. Was so annoying. I have mykeyboard set about 15cm from the edge of the desk so my forearms are resting on it.
While I had the chair with the arm rests I kept banging the arm rests into the desk and couldn't sit as close to the desk as I would have liked. The solution was to lower the chair but then I was sitting too low. If you have a chair with arm rests make sure they are adjustable so you can set them to the correct height for yourself. The one I had was fixed. Arm rests are good if your keyboard is on the edge of the desk and your arms would be resting on nothing. Due to the weight of your arms it would cause you shoulder and upper back pain. If you have your keyboard set further back on the desk like I do its best without them since your arms should be getting a decent amount of support from the desk. |

Before I was I sitting about 6 hours a day in front of a computer doing something with some breaks getting up to fix others computers. At least now I am on the road and out of the office one day a week meeting with clients and maintianing our equipment in several locations. Many of them are with local coffee houses and bars....
aka, free coffee and beer...what else could you ask for? |
