Spam now Illegal
Spam has now become illegal in the UK and the new law is due to go into force as of December this year. Full report here:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/3120628.stm Don't you think it's about time the US, Japan, China, India etc, some of the biggest producers of this junk fell in line?? What are your opinions of the new penalties in the UK and the existing ones in Italy?

All they do here in the states is argue over which stupid party's spam bill is better. And in the meantime another hundred spams show up in my inbox.

Australia is passing similar laws. Au$1 million fine for repeat offenders.
Only catch is that the spam must originate in Australia. So it will not help.....

Passing a law is one thing.
Enforcing it is another matter entirely.

The brits don't really enforce their Tele law regarding unsolicited callers, do they? I heard someone griping about that not long ago and saying how they didn't know of anything in place to actually prosecute this law besides that one guy that runs some dept. or another.

spam will never be stopped... because some mail servers often support spams to support their "service"?
i think not. |

It's a good gesture, but I don't have much confidence in it really changing things unless other nations follow suit. However, it has made me think again about how 'spam' is actually defined. If you send just one solitary unsolicited email, is that spam? could you be sentenced for that? At what point/quantity does it become spam? Praps I should go and read up on the details.. I wouldn't want my company to get into trouble for sending an email to a 'relevant' new contact in an attempt to drum up some legitimate business. Perhaps I'll have to learn to use my printer again and go and buy some stamps - now surely *that's not illegal

They should really do something more like have some Spam Police, but then once you get into that you get into stopping the internet from being what makes it great. The ablility for freedom

What on earth would this law effect when most of that spam doesn't even come from Britain? They can't possibly even dream of enforcing that law before spamming becomes pretty much illegal pretty much everywhere which is pretty unlikely.

I couldn't agree more. It really worries me too - if I become a dad some day, am I going to have to ban the kids from hotmail? I would not want anyone under the age of 18 to see some of the filth that gets sent around. |

I never use hotmail for that reason, I also would not want any kids to be using that service. Most likely best thing to do is have a whitelist setup with domains and addresses that are allowed to send mail and redirect anything else to yourself, if its valid it can then be added to whitelist.
Of course Hotmail dont offer this service, you really need to run own mailserver |
