Suggestions for Amazon Wishlist
I'm making an Amazon wish list at the moment and looking for any recommendations on books.
I'm one of those weird people who think the PHP and MySQL manuals are great and all I really need in regard to those programs, so I'm looking for books that cover programming, databases, etc, at a higher level. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/r...8772978-5968169 Any recommendations on good database books that cover principles, design, maintenance, theories, etc... I'm pretty much a PHP programmer, too, so any books on procedures, algorithms, web security, etc, are appreciated. I've picked out a couple Web Hacking books. If you're familiar with them, let me know if they are good or bad. Any recommendations appreciated. Feel free to buy me something if you think I deserve it. ![]() ---John Holmes... PS: The cookbook is for my wife! ![]() |

I buy a lot of books as references and use them occasionally to solve a problem. There are very few programming books that I've actually read cover-to-cover. The exceptions are the following two excellent books:
The Object Oriented Thought Process This was the book where I finally "got it" when trying to understand objects, abstract classes, etc. The Pragmatic Programmer I also enjoyed reading this book. It made me rethink some of the (bad) programming habits I had fallen into over the years. Also any of these books: C++ In-Depth Series When I want to realize how stupid I am and really challenge myself, I read the books from this series (I have six of them). Slowly it is starting to sink in, but these guys are definitely programming at a much higher level than I am. One thing all these books have in common is that they pack a ton of good information in really small books. Most (maybe all of them) are around 200 pages. |

Awesome suggestions. I added them both; they look like interesting reading. Thanks.

Four that I can suggest, perhaps a little of kilter but good reading:
Mastering Regular Expressions Zero: The Biography of a Dangerous Idea Chaos by James Gleick Faster by James Gleick |

Wow... yeah, I forgot about regular expressions. While I dig the PHP and MySQL manual, I haven't found any really in depth manuals available for regular expressions. A book would be good.
The other suggestions are great, too. I love the Zero book... I'm adding that right now. Ya'll feel free to buy me something! ![]() ![]() ![]() |

It exists in this ethereal plane, and despite wannabe critic reviews a very enjoyable cup'o'java The answer, as they say, is - How bad you want it ..? Ax - the fourth little pig, who was on his way back with a 40lb sledge hammer (STG(GBP) Joke 40 pound ... isn't that expensive for a hammer ) Ax II |

One book I've always wanted to read was "The Amazing Adventures of Captain Gladys Stout-Pamphlet and her Intrepid Spaniel Stig Amongst the Giant Pygmies of Beckles Volume 8" (Wink, wink, nudge, nudge to all you Monty Python Bookshop fans out there). ![]() |
