Suggestions for places to go in Amsterdam and Copenhagen
Folks,
Hey, the wife, two-year old daughter, myself and the mother-in-law (luckily, we get along fine) are going to the above cities. Any suggestions from former tourists and/or natives of places on- or off- the beaten path are appreciated. . . Thanks! I'm getting really psyched. . . |

Go to http://www.amsterdam.nl and choose the english version and then 'tourism' and you should get some information about it. The canals are nice if you're not 'used' to them (you can take a tour on some tourististboats), as is the old (historic) centre/buildings. If you're into culture (or your relatives are
) I'd say visit at least the 'Rijksmuseum' with the paintings and stuff (e.g. Nachtwacht - Nightwatch). Well, can't think of anything else actually, unless you want to visit the Red Light District, 'De Wallen', tuxie already mentioned ![]()

Just got back from Amsterdam and Copenhagen. . . Loved them both, loved Amsterdam more!
Amsterdam is pretty much everything I want in a city: metropolitan, open-minded, small, and TONS of fun. Amsterdam was awesome, both my wife and I want to move there (with 2 year-old in tow) I'm putting together a photo site, I'll get a link together eventually. Next step is figuring out how to get a cool web programming job in Amsterdam and move the family there. . . Anyone hiring? One question for the Dutch- What's the deal with the folks with brown-painted faces (what we would call black-face in the States) in relation to the holiday season? This seems mildly racist and would never fly in the States, but no one seemed to care there. I'm sure there's a good reason for them irrespective of race. |

Oh, and as Linus said-
"Software is like sex- it's better when it's free" I couldn't bring myself to pay for sex. . . And I hate paying the Microsoft tax, too. |

Ah,you mean 'Sinterklaas' and his 'Zwarte Pieten'?Sinterklaas was a guy that was rich and he bought presents for the poor, but he needed help with this so he hired some black people to help him.But he was to dumb to remember their names,so he called them all 'Piet'.And this is celebrated every 5 december, when people get presents from Sinterklaas. Anyways, its quite obviouis that Sinterklaas has black slaves, but its 'tradition' so it isn't racisme. |

I'm not sure about the slave-part since I always thought they were just helpers of him who got their black faces (skin) by going through chimneys all the time
![]() Anyway, I found a bit more detailled description in English in case some of you are interested in this Quote:
Actually we celebrated it yesterday on the dorm where I live and it is huge fun making the presents and poems for your friends or family and then watch as they open it or hear them read the poem (in which you of course put some humurous events from the past year the person would have rather forgotten ) |

Funny. I suspected it was something like that. And there isn't enough black folks in Holland to use real ones?
Or is it the tradition that the folks that represent these "helpers" are white folks in black face? This seems the more likely scenario. Anyway, it's still an awesome city/country, despite some things that seem strange to a North American. Go if you can! I wish we could've been there for the festivities yesterday. Another thing about Holland and Denmark is they are much more kid-friendly, by and large, than the States. Last edited by Hero Zzyzzx : December 6th, 2002 at 09:18 AM. |
