According to the article (great article by the way) This form
of 'Interrogation' is new. It is up to the Geneva convention to decide if it is torture. Two things to say regarding the alleged brutality of these methods: 1.) September 11th, 2001 2.) Iraqi's cheering and celebrating the news of the above on national television, telling Americans to basically f***off. For the first time in my nearly 30 years on this earth, I agree that this is one war we need to fight. |

I'll bite... but I promise I'll be good the rest of the thread (those of you who don't understand that, please search the Lounge for "un-american way").

Which was (likely, but never proven by our fearless leader) carried out by Al-Quaeda, a group who has no love lost for seeing Hussein gone and a group whom Hussein would be highly unlikely to be interested in climbing into bed with. Two totally different agendas. If you want to play the blame game for terrorism, I'd suggest you point your finger at Iran, Syria, or N. Korea. Hell, Egypt was probably more dangerous than Iraq. All Hussein wanted was to be left alone to his murderous tendencies (which is not cool and a good enough reason to wipe him up in my book...). Iran, on the other hand, has been "warring" with us for nearly 2 decades, Syria's a nasty little place that's very very well known for sponsering terrorism, and North Korea is like a big open-air market for weapons that terrorists like. Quote:
Well now, it's highly likely that you can blame good ol' Mr. Insane for that. He reguarly instigated "celebrations" in the streets that he could show all over the place. If a guy like that tells you to do something, it's either do it, or watch your kid die on the rack or something. Not cool at all. I think he had a problem with his... uh... little friend. Feeling inadequate maybe.... On top of that, we DID just waltz into THEIR country and knock it apart. Plus all indicators seem to say no WMD and we're eyeing up the oil. Despite the best efforts of our troops, I don't think our desk jockey friends here at home have done a whole lot to spread goodwill in the area.... I too think this was a war that COULD have been fought with just cause... but it wasn't. There was no clear justification (it went from "Iraq was involved in 9/11" to "Iraq sponsors terrorists" to "Iraq has WMD" to "Iraq is trying to rebuild its WMD program" to "We're liberating Iraq" - make up your damn mind), there are MUCH bigger threats to the U.S. out there, we haven't finished our job in Afghanastan, and we can't afford to keep funding these wars - especially if this weasly freak tries to cut taxes again! Ugh... I'm disgusted and disillusioned again.... |

It is up to the individual to have an opinion on the topic. Mine is that it is. Quote:
Yeah, well, what was the total amount of Iraqi soldiers participating in that? Quote:
[sarcasm]Clearly a reason for torture.[/sarcasm] Quote:
For not the first time in my humble 18 years on this rock, I think that mankind deserves a nuclear war. Maybe the next intelligent species will be a bit brighter.

>>am I the only person here who is concerned about those POWs being tortured?
They are not POW's. POW's have rights under International law and the Geneva Convention (including the right to a trial). These guys are 'unlawful or illegal combatants'. This is a term introduced by Rumsfelt so the US can deny them these rights. >>But won't some of the children (13 year olds) in Camp X-Ray enjoy some of this stuff. They are getting the same 24/7 light and sound show. Plus they get food as a 'reward' for information (to go along with the arbitary, indefinate detention). One of the Australians, Hicks, has been told by the US military his father is making himself sick (over his sons imprisonment) to induce Hicks to talk. Is that torture? >>Two things to say regarding the alleged brutality of these methods: 1.) September 11th, 2001 This is the same Machiavellian reasoning used by the terrorists in justifing the deaths of civillians to promote thier cause. Aren't we ment to be the good guys? >>and North Korea is like a big open-air market for weapons that terrorists like. much easier to get nukes ect through the old Soviet Union countries. Look at the fissile material the Chechneyan rebels 'revealed' in a Moscow park. Or the Pakistani reporter who was told by OBL that Al Queda had several suitcase nukes (nuke artillery shells in a suitcase detonator, some 100 are missing from the old USSR) >>we haven't finished our job in Afghanastan, and we can't afford to keep funding these wars Then you are not going to like what is going to happen soon in the Phillipines.....
