My second major pet hate (and I've seen it rather frequently) is this (and this EXACT question):

1: how do I get the first n words from a field in MySQL?
2: get from database and then use explode() or substr().
    1: k, thx, bye!

(My first, if anyone cares is "I like to configure my whole webserver in .htaccess files").

speaking of which, how many HW assignments do mods have to deal with, on average? I've had about 3 in the past couple weeks over at DevA, something I didn't expect for some reason.... maybe the mods here are just too fast
