TigerDirect.com Experiences?
I got a TigerDirect magazine in the mail today. They seem to have some pretty good prices, especially on barebones. Anyone dealt with them recently, have any stories, etc.?
Thanks, Chris |

Do a search for tiger direct here on the boards - should yield a few posts with recommendations from me. The best pricing available and some of the best service I have ever had. Been ordering from them for just over three years now and have issued them something like 10 purchase orders for various things.

After using newegg.com for a number of orders, I've been EXTREMELY happy with both their return policy (liberal, except you pay shipping back), prices, and quick turnaround. No experience with TigerDirect. . .I'm a newegg man myself.

Dan Bernstein seems to like GoogleGear's and newegg's site. He has a list of warehouses here with his own views on them: http://cr.yp.to/hardware/warehouse.html
Then again, the man has his own views on a lot of things, so I'd like to state here that I personally haven't bought anything from any of the above. Personally, for buying major stuff like a computer system, I shop online from a warehouse in the Los Angeles area because it works out cheaper for me (and is as fast as shopping at a store, but with very competitive prices) --- I order online on their website and drive over to their warehouse to pick the parts up. This way, I avoid the mysterious "Shipping and Handling" charges that most online vendors tack on, to drive up their profits. I only get charged $5 on top as a "handling charge" and this is the same whether I order one component or a bunch of items. Also, I have the parts in my hands within an hour of ordering from the website (about the time for me to drive there and pick them up) . The warehouse is a pretty well rated online business, so I know I'm getting good quality parts. For quick n' dirty shopping, I go to Frys or BestBuy because they're closer to me.

I like Newegg myself. My brother has ordered a few things from Tigerdirect, all of which were delivered. The one thing I dont like about TD is that they charge more shipping on things than Newegg. Many items that Newegg ships for free TD does not.
Also, Newegg uses Fedex, while TD uses UPS. At least where I live now UPS stinks. I live right next to a duplex that shares my housenumber, it is a 1/2. And the UPS guy cant seem to tell the difference, they have some really stupid employes.

I've often compared newegg and Googlegear, but Googlegear usually edges out newegg on a s&h difference of a few bucks (e.g. newegg wants to charge 3 or 4 bucks and it's 2-day free from GG). The only thing I don't like about NE though is the site itself. I always find it difficult to navigate.
One other place I often look to is tcwo.com, but they never seem to have that great a selection. I think I'll add TD as another shop to compare to GG, NE, and TCWO. Woohoo! Capitalism rocks! Sometimes. (joke... it's a joke) |

I buy everything I can online. ZipZoomFly (GoogeGear's new name)
Was absolutely great! The prices are awsome and the free shipping can't be beat. Example: Friday, 4:45 EST. My friend calls me up and tells me his girlfriend just bought him a new motherboard and P4 3.06 chip (now that's a girlfriend!) for his birthday, which I forgot. So as he was talking to me on the phone describing his board, I silently headed over to GoogleGear and ordered a 512 stick of DDR RAM for him. It arrived at noon on Monday, perfect timing. I highly recommend ZipZoomFly to anyone, start with a simple order and find out what they can do for you. If you don't like them, try out PCConnection.com http://www.zipzoomfly.com (Formerly GoogleGear.com) http://www.pcconnection.com |

Just bought a Lian Li PC-65 case and a ThermalTake power supply from newegg which both came yesterday. No problems, plenty of email correspondence keeping me informed of how the order was being processed and where it was.
I've bought from them before and have only had good experiences. The biggest thing I've ever bought online was a 21" monitor from buy.com many years ago and that came flawlessly as well. -b

I've used tiger direct for years, ever since the days of those large Computer Shopper mags. I have always found them to be great on prices and I haven't had any issues that I can think of...

I finally went with Tigerdirect for a KVM switch and a cheap PSU and GoogleGear/ZipFlyZoom (or, whatever) for a DVD drive and GeForce 5200 FX (yea, yea, but it was almost a hundred bucks under the Radeon 9600 Pro and it's a pretty big upgrade as is from a TNT2 M64 for someone who doesn't have any games less than 2 years old... so bleh).
ZipFlyZoom/GG seems to have the best prices when the selection matches up - especially since I didn't pay any S&H for 2-day delivery. Tigerdirect seems to have a better selection as far as a wide array of performance though (like in the PSU dept. for example - GG only had relatively beefy supplies, but TD had a wimpier 300W one which will suit my skimpier Linux box just fine). |
