Time for an Oracle Forum?
Don't you think that it's time for an Oracle Forum, expecially seeing the low interest for PostgreSQL?

I don't think this is the right place for an Oracle Forum; if you scan the number of posts dealing with Oracle, you won't find that many (except yours
)...The Postgres forum isn't exactly hot either, although it's a great database with lots of features. And since Oracle is aimed towards the heavy databases, with a matching price tag, do you think this is the right place for it? I'm aware of the developer's edition of Oracle, which I have myself, but it ain't exactly a beginners first choice, is it? And there are some good forums/channels available for Oracle users, so I doubt that a forum here would be that frequently visited. But then again, that's just my point of view... //NoXcuz

Possibly, to stop any confusion and to make the forum more compact a few forums could be lumped together under a collective 'databases forum.' Then there's no worrying about where to post a databases related question.

So far I haven't seen a single Oracle related question here. On the other hand, there really is no place to post general Database questions so maybe people with Oracle questions (or Sybase, DB2, MSSQL, Frontbase etc...) don't know where to ask and leave? I would suggest introducing a "General" forum under "Databases", where general database questions could be posted (like DBMS comparisons, discussions on SQL in general, discussion on OQL and other coming technologies, relational theory, database design not specific to a given implementation etc...)

Got some points there, binky & andnęss... Some kind of general database forum would be a good idea...
Though most of the questions seem to be MySQL specific (could that be due to the fact that there's a MySQL forum? ), and a lot of people use it with PHP, so I think a separate MySQL forum is still needed...///NoXcuz |

Yes we certainly still need the MySQL forum, so I was proposing the "General" forum as an addition.

Makes sense, then people asking SQL questions in the PHP forum may be persuaded to ask them in a 'databases and SQL' section.

Hello All
Although I believe, having a Oracle forum would help me very much at times, it is not really a open source kind of thing! I see many of you quote things (like)...... "This is a open source forum, if you need help with ASP or what-ever you need to find a forum for that" So I feel it would not be fair to other programs, and or languages that do not fall in some way under the "open source term" and they do not also have a forum! Like I said having a Orcale forum would be great, just a few weeks ago it cost me $240 for 3 hour of advance tech help, to setup a "RAID MIRRORING/DUPLEXING" system to work with "9i". I am all for saving money by learning from other's, but to be fair, Oracle to me just does not fit in to what this forum is very much about! *OPEN SOURCE Programming* Just me pressing keys! F! |

Personally I think open-source or not it's silly to not offer somebody who is stuck some help.
My main point is though, Windows ain't open source, Flash isn't either.. so why not add Oracle to the 'help given for..' list? Don't know why ASP isn't available either as it's technically open source and there's bugger all help on it on the internet compared to PHP. |

Flash, Windows or Java are not Open Source and they still have forums here, so the Open Source argument is not sound if you ask me. AFAIK ASP has several good communities around, so I don't think there's a need for an ASP forum. Devshed's community is strongest in PHP/MySQL, and I think Devshed should remained focused on these.
That said, I would strongly suggest creating a "General" forum under the Databases header, and add more specialized forums later if traffic permits. |
