Unfinished Pojects: A Developer's Life.
Is it just me, or does it seem that projects are easy to finish for other people, but when ever you want to take on a project of your own, you always get about 85% complete and then just drop the ball on it? It seems like I keep doing this, and moving on to other projects that I will undoubtedly drop the ball on. I guess, I just gots to work on one at a time... ha!

Just troll through SF and have a look at all the projects that havent been worked on for ages.... there are so many :-/
Its just the nature of things. |

The first 80% of a project takes the first 80% of the time, and the remaining 20% of the project takes the other 80% of the time.

That's 160% of the time, how do you get things done so fast? It usually takes me another 160% to finish that last part

Indeed, Sam777 I know exactly what you're saying as I have several projects that I'd like to do/complete if only I'd have the free time.

Well, the bad thing is that normally, projects are never really completed. Once you think your finished, you think of something else that needs to be done to it, or some un-thought-of feature (read: bug) pops up.

Nah, all my code is bug free as soon as it's written

My software never has bugs, it just develops random features.
User: Oi, your program wiped my hard drive and I have lost my data Support: Oh thats a new 'space consolidation' feature in the software.... |

I would finish but...
I can never find a good project. I setup Linux (multiple flavors), Tomcat, mysql, PostgreSQL, Apache w/ pearl and php support and got them all to work together... but what do I do now?
I can never find a practical use that interests me enough to build something worth while. Ahh well. |

How about spending some quality time sorting through freshmeat, sourceforge, and other OS software sites and playing with what other people have written for a while? I would say that seeing how well, or not so well, already written software works is a great way to get the creative juices flowing.

Fix or expand upon other people's ideas, interesting notion jkrew. I will give it a try.
Reminds me of Japan's roadmap to becoming a powerfull economic entity, during the 50's and 60's. ![]() |
