Version Control program

Hi

I'm looking for a shareware or freeware program that allows version tracking in a development area. I'm already using MS Visual SourceSafe, but what I need (additionally) is an application that keeps record of the file versions that are installed with different customers (so that I could see which customers need upgrading when changing my application). If there would be programs that integrate with SourceSafe it would be perfect, but even a stand-alone software app would do. Does someone know such a program?
