Me.

Check the Windows forum, there are a lot of us who were affected by this exploit.

Oh, and, btw, *BSD is dying

No... Windoze is.. in fact, according to this pretty timer it has about 56 seconds left to live.

bah... you fools. I patch with impunity. I bounce from one artificial Windoze disaster to another like a ping pong ball in a clothes dryer. I whip patches on without regression tests. I disable all my services. I firewall every port. I set my A/V scans to the most paranoid state possible.

I have a computer which does NOTHING! MWA HAHHAHAAHAHA! The ultimate in security! I can't even boot it up, it's so secure!

Seriously though... I use Linux for anything that matters ... I just sit back and watch you nuts run around in circles and laaaaugh all the way as Red Hat network sends me the latest patches.

Had some problems at work though... most of our servers are Win32 (NT/2000) and all of our desktops are Win32. They had to cut off a lot of traffic at the firewall because we're under attack.. unfortuantely, they didn't tell us they were doing this, so we've been seeing all our script-generated e-mails hit the server and go out to the network just fine... but then they appear to never come back in.... not cool.

[tip]
For those of you who don't read /. , the best tip I saw if you get the timer of doom is to just set your system time back an hour or two. That gives you plenty of extra time to apply the patch you should've done a long time ago (prudent system admins excused, of course) and run the removal tool.
[/tip]

Windows has this too...it's called 'Critical Update'. The problem is though is most
people shut this off.

I just came off the road from fixing this worm at a clients office. It was
the same problem, they shut off the updates, which would have
patched this problem.

For those that run Windows, especially servers, there is a program called
hfnetcheck from Shavlik Technologies that is a simple command line
tool that scans your Comp/Server for patch/update info and let's you
know which ones you need. The free tool only tells you whereas the paid
tool has links and DL's them for you. I swear by this tool:

It was a joke... read /. sometime, its just a reflexive comment whenever I read that someone is using *bsd to say that its dying. Seriously, I don't really think that *bsd is dying, hence the after my comment.

I'm w/ you 100% on that. The only thing stopping me from going completely linux is the fact that my wife and son use the same computer to hit the web, email & IM... and, they're pretty used to what we've got now. I'm thinking of setting up dual boot to get them used to the new GUI, apps, et al, and then eventually remove Windows altogether. I just don't want to go through this again.

As a Mac owner, I always smile at these viruses. Especially ones like this one.

It might effect the computer at my work, but I don't care. If this computer crashes, it means they'll pay me to sit here and draw the rest of the day.

hmmm...

Anyone know of an infected computer I could go visit?

Guy on /. in the discussion claims there's an ATM in England freaking out over it.

Windows has this too...it's called 'Critical Update'.

Critical Update is a sick joke. There was a big hullabaloo about how it would warn you that there were "Critical Updates" for download, but the only thing that was there was an IE upgrade. Also, it was reporting that there were critical updates but it turned out they were already applied. Of course, this can become quite annoying when the only way to tell it to shut up for good is to install the patch...

And, regardless, the worst thing about Microsoft patches sometimes is the patches themselves. There are even reports about this latest patch not always being effective when applied properly. Linux, BSD, Unix (especially), and Macs aren't immune to viruses and vulnerabilities, but at least when the patches are released, they aren't sent out in some huge, grossly oversized package that contains 82,000 different updates - most of which won't work together!

Besides... Macs are good for... ummm... uhhh.... well....

I jest....
