want-to-know: Education / Degree background
If you are work in the IT/IS field (not software engineering, but strictly IT) and specialize in database, application dev, or programming, I would like to know your education background. I am trying to decide the path to embark on myself.

I've studied Computer Science & Business Management.
It's given me the best of both world's I think, as I now have the programming/development skills to create the solutions, as well as having the Business knowledge to ensure solutions are sensitive to business requirements and can provide the information the business needs. I guess the business knowledge allows for a little initiative to enhance solutions to provide things not necessarily mentioned in the requirements spec of the project.

Do a search on this forum, someone had a thread just like this several weeks/months ago and it was pretty long

Great, another poll
![]() Where can I vote for the UK? But seriously. Mohecan is right. A combination of Computer Sience or the sort and something like Business Management is a good combination. Then you have the 'how' and 'why' covered. For myself I studied something completely different, but afterwards took a lot of cources and IT-trainings. I think most important to realise is that your studies will never really end. There's always something new to learn.

Oh, and my degree will be in chemical engineering (other). Why I have a job in web development at the moment is rather strange to me. So, my questions are because this is not my area of training, not because I'm just a moron

Aero
I have a 1st Class BEng Honours in Aerospace Engineering. It was the robotics and control stuff that got me into programming, then the 'freedom' (politically and financially) which drew me to internet applications development.
I now work in PERL, PHP, XML, Javascript, Java and bash - although I never used any of these whilst studying my degree! However the background in C was a definite help. anyway, ta for the distraction.. back to work ![]() christo

I've got a degree in Chemical Engineering but decided I liked playing with computers more than pipes. Just be sure when you choose your degree choose something you're really interested in, not just something you think will get you a job after - you'll do a lot better with a subject you enjoy.

Absolutely. I know some idiots (I'm being kind) who are in CIT strictly for the $, and they always complain to me that they don't like programming at all. They've already dropped out of every other engineering major. And they want internships and scholarships. Good thing I am doing exactly what I want to do right now, but I don't know how long that will stay. |

I am confused, how is application development and programming not software development? I am going to assume you mean you do not want to do hard core C++ game/kernel development and more internet stuff from your strictly IT comment... but even then if you are doing backend work that is still software development. Maybe it is just too early in the morning for me to read questions like this. |
