If you need open source software that did not come with your distro already, here´s the two big sites that I know that offer this:
http://sourceforge.net http://freshmeat.net

Take a look at Horde IMP and SquirrelMail, the 2 biggest Open Source players.

I personalli like sendmail with jwebmail for the frontend. Interface can be customed via templates and is pretty straight foward on the configuration.

Try IlohaMail...
at URL , if you already have a working SMTP and IMAP/POP3 servers. It is written in ordinary PHP with no special libraries needed, and will work with almost any webserver that has PHP working on it.
Also check out URL is you need a complete mail server solution, complete with MTA (SMTP server), IMAP, POP3, and webmail servers. |

I had my email server at my old company setup like this:
Cyrus for IMAP & POP http://asg.web.cmu.edu/cyrus/ Postfix for STMP http://www.postfix.org/ Webmail with Horde's IMP http://www.horde.org/imp/ Addressbook with Horde's Kronolith http://www.horde.org/kronolith/ Virus scanning done via Amavis http://www.amavis.org/ and Sophos anti-virus http://www.sophos.com/ This setup worked extremely well and the only money I had to spend was for Sophos anti-virus. |

Well I am using Sophos in an environment that consists of a Linux server for mail and Windows NT server with Mac and PC clients. We have Sophos running on all machines and find it very easy to manage. Its great that it works on all platforms.

Andreas. I must admit it is nice having the mac client. NOD doesn't have a mac client. We have been using NAV for the MAC clients. NOD has picked everything up so far though. You should check it out http://www.nod32.com.au/ . Msg me for an eval. So far it has picked up "everything" that has hit it.</off topic> Has anyone tried Samsung Contact nee "Hp open mail"? There is a free version for up to 5 users. It is positioned against MS Exchange. |
